What is a NOTE?
Notes are musical
symbols written to
represent musical
sounds.
Each note represents a
particular time value or
duration.
DURATION
Duration is the length of
time a sound or silence
lasts.
Parts of a Note
hook
stem

head
Every note begins
with a note head. A
whole note is an
empty note head and
represented by a
ring. It has 4 counts
or beats.
A half note has a stem. A
stem is vertical line jutting
up from the right or down
from the left of the note
head. A half note has 2
counts or beats. Two half
notes occupy the same
amount of time as one
whole note.
A quarter note has a
colored note head and a
stem. It is a musical note
having the time value of
a quarter of a whole
note or a half note. It
receives 1 beat or count.
An eight notes has a
colored note head
with a stem and one
hook. It is a musical
note played for the
duration 1/2.
A sixteenth note has
a colored note head
with a stem and two
hooks. It is a musical
note played for the
duration of ¼.
Music is made up of not only sounds,
but also the silence between sounds.
Rests are symbols for silence. There
is no singing or playing of
instruments. Rest have the same
name as those of the notes.
A whole rest is compared
to an inverted hat. It is
drawn like a shaded
square with a vertical line
on top and written and
hangs down on the fourth
line of the staff. It is equal
to 4 counts or beats.
A half rests looks
like a magician’s
hat and it sits on
the line. It is equal
2 counts or beats.
A quarter rest is
equal to the value
of a quarter note.
It receives 1 count
or beat.
An eight rest is
equal to an eight
notes which
receives ½ count
or beat
Just like the sixteenth
note, a sixteenth rest
is equivalent to ¼
count or beat and is
drawn with two
hooks.
