Evaluation of awareness regarding

malocclusion and orthodontic
procedures among the outpatients
referred to Dept of Orthodontics

-A cross-sectional study

MUZAMMIL NAWAZ
4TH BDS , JSS DC&H, MYSORE
What Is Malocclusion?
 Malocclusion can be defined as an occlusion in
which there is a molar relationship between
the arches in any of the planes of spaces or in
which there are anomalies in tooth position
beyond the normal limits.
Need for the awareness..
 Tooth mal-alignment may cause a number of problems, including social
discrimination due to different facial appearance, such as difficulties in jaw
movements (lack of muscle coordination or pain), oral function problems
temporo-mandibular joint disorder (TMD), problems of masticatory system,
swallowing or speech, and increased susceptibility to trauma, periodontal
disease or caries.
 However, almost always, orthodontic treatment is an elective one but it can be useful
in cases of psycho-social, developmental, functional, and oral health
problems.
 Facial appearance is one of the most important physical characteristics in the
development of one's self-confidence; therefore, it seems that people who are
satisfied with their own appearance, have more self-confidence in comparison with
others. The most important motivation for orthodontic treatment is improvement in
dentofacial esthetics.
 An increase in the number of orthodontic treatments has been seen in most
industrialized countries in recent decades.
 Demand for orthodontic treatment is influenced not only by the malocclusion
prevalence and severity but also by sex, socioeconomic status, and ethnic origin, as
well as availability and funding of orthodontic services. For instance, it has been
observed that girls, in general, undergo orthodontic treatment more frequently than
boys.
AIM

 To evaluate the level of awareness regarding

malocclusion and orthodontic treatment
techniques & its management.
 To investigate correlations between
satisfaction with dental and facial
appearance and expectations of orthodontic
treatment.
 The effects of gender and age on these
variables were also explored.
Materials And Methods
 A survey pro forma was prepared using a self-
administered, structured questionnaire written in
English to assess the level of awareness
regarding malocclusion and orthodontic
treatment techniques & procedures.

 The subjects of this study were the out-patients

at the Department of Orthodontics, JSS Dental
College & Hospital, Mysore.

 The survey comprised of 10 close ended

questions.
  A sample of 120 patients who applied for
orthodontic treatment at The JSS Dental
College and Hospital, Mysore completed a set
of questions, containing 10 items on
expectations of orthodontic treatment.
 The statistical data was analyzed.
 Correlations between patients' expectations,
satisfaction with facial appearance and
gender were examined.
 Significant correlations were found.

Conclusion
This survey shows that .,
There is a good awareness about Orthodontic Treatment.

People are more concerned about Aesthetics and particularly “Smile Aesthetics”.

Preference towards Fixed Appliances over Removable Appliances.

Necessityin creating awareness about Invisible Orthodontics.( Maybe lack of

information by any type of media contributed to inadequate awareness about
orthodontics)

People are satisfied about the Treatment and would recommend others.

Theinformation package developed for this study increased awareness of the

implications and practical difficulties which may be encountered during a course of
orthodontic treatment, and produced some changes in attitude towards treatment.
