Methods of Lubrication

• There are three basic methods of lubrication

for roller chain drives. Close adherence to
these recommended types of lubrication is
essential in obtaining the maximum service
life of a chain drive.
• These recommended types of lubrication, as
shown in fig. are determined by the chain
speed and the amount of power transmitted.
1) Manual or Drip Lubrication :-
Lubricant applied manually with an oil can or
brush is acceptable for slow speed drives.
2) Bath Lubrication:- Lubricant is applied to the
chain by allowing the oil level within an enclosed
casing to cover the chain at approximately the
pitch line at its lowest point of operation.
3) Circulating Lubrication
•This is similar to bath lubrication with the
exception that the lubricant is pumped onto
the chain under pressure.
ROPE DRIVE
types
• Fibre Ropes

• Wire Rpes
Application
• The rope drives are extensively used when a
large amount of power is to be transmitted
over a large distances.
Example: Lifts, cranes, hoists etc.
Steel Rope
Advantage
• Excellent resistance to salt water corrosion.
• Good bright attractive modern finish.
• Non magnetic.
• reasonable resistance to corrosion
• Large power can be transmitted
• Durable.
Disadvantage
• High cost compared with belt and chain.
• High Maintenance cost
• Lubrication is needed.
Gear Drive
Fig. Shows Law Of Gearing
CLASSIFICATION OF GEARS
There are different types of arrangement of shafts which are used in
practice. According to the relative positions of shaft axes, different
types of gears are used.
1. SPUR GEAR
2.Helical Gear
Helical gear used in Automatic
transmission of an automobile
3. Double Helical Gear
Application in high capacity reduction
drives i.e. cement mill and crusher
4.Rack and Pinion

Helical tooth rack and pinion

Typical example of Rack and Pinion
5.Bevel Gear
i) Straight Bevel Gear
Worm Gear
Features:-
1) Non intersecting axes
2) It consist of Worm, similar to screw
3) And a Worm gear
4) used for converting horizontal to
vertical drive

Application:-
material handling and transportation machinery, machine tools,
automobiles etc.
ii) Spiral Bevel Gear

Gear train
What is Gear Train?
Sometimes, Two Or more gears are made to mesh to with
each other to transmit power from one shaft to another.

Types of Gear Train:-

• Simple Gear Train

• Compound gear train
• Reverted gear Train
• Epicyclic Gear train
Simple Gear train

When there is only one

gear on each shaft.
 The only function of the
idler gear is to change the
direction of rotation.
It has no affect on the gear
ratio.
Compound Gear Train

When there are more

than one gear on a shaft, it is
called a compound gear
Train.

For large velocities ratios,

compound gear train
arrangement is preferred.
Reverted Gear Train

When the axes of the first driver

and the last driven are co-axial,
then the gear train is known as
reverted gear train.

 In a reverted gear train, the

motion of the first gear and the last
gear is same.
Epicyclic Gear Train
Application
 The reverted gear trains are used in automotive transmissions,
lathe back gears, industrial speed reducers, and in clocks (where
the minute and hour hand shafts are co-axial).

ADVANTAGES

It can give very high or low velocity ratio compared

to simple and compound gear train.
