Wall Treatment

• A wall is a structure that defines an


area, carries a load, or provides
shelter or security.
• A wall treatment is any treatment
given to a wall to enhance the
interior or exterior look of the
structure.
• It should reflect the personality of
the person who uses the room.
• It should harmonize with the floor
and ceiling.
• It is used to conceal various building
components.

Types of Wall Treatments
Paint
• Paint is the easiest finish to apply and the
easiest way to redecorate an interior space.
• It is inexpensive and impermanent which
allows experimenting with different colors
and finishes.
• The selection of the finish and the color
should be in harmony with the ceiling and
floor.
Wallpaper
• Wallpaper have a paper face and a paper
back.
• It is mostly used in residential spaces as it
is subject to soiling, abrasion and fading.
• Textured and 3D wallpapers are also
available which add another dimension to
the interiors.
Paneling
• Paneling is a decorative treatment done
with panels on the walls in various
designs.
• Panels are of various types including
wooden panels, PVC panels, glass panels,
3D panels, etc.
• Plywood or wooden panels are covered
with veneers or laminate.
Molding
• Molding is a piece of wood, plastic, stone,
etc. that has been made into a particular
shape to decorate the top or bottom of a
wall, or a door, window.
• Different types of decorative molding are
used including the most common chair rail
molding which is used to protect the walls
from being damaged by furniture.
Plaster
• Plaster of Paris is a building material
which is used to provide a smooth finish
generally applied on interior walls.
• It is an old technique.
• It often chips and cracks as a house settles
over time.
Wainscoting
• Wainscoting is a style of paneling that only
covers the lower portion of walls.
• Traditionally, a wainscot rises to a level about
one-third of the total height of the wall.
• The top of the wainscot is often bounded by
a chair rail molding.
• It is made from wood bead board painted
white, but it can be made from other
materials like stained and finished hardwood
paneling or wallpaper.
Tiles
• Tiles can be installed one tile at a time or
in sheets held together with a mesh like
backing.
• It provides easy maintenance as they are
easy to clean.
• They can crack and chip but can be easily
replaced.
• Ceramic and mosaic tiles are most
commonly used.
Leather
• Leather panels add distinction to any
room, especially a masculine office or
living area.
• Embossed or flat, leather panels in all
shades and finishes can turn a room into a
chic and luxurious space.
• Leather tiles are also used on the walls.
Stone veneer
• Any stone used as decorative facing
material that is not meant to be load
bearing.
• It can be made from natural as well as
manufactured stone.
• The stone is cut to a consistent thickness
and weight for use as a veneer.
Brick and brick veneer
• Brick is always a classic and many
converted loft spaces and traditional
homes have areas of brick in their
interiors.
• Brick can be painted or left in its natural
state.
• Brick veneers can also be used.
Murals
• A Mural is any piece of artwork painted or
applied directly on the wall.
• The architectural elements of the given
space are harmoniously incorporated into
the picture.
• Traditional murals are mostly done
according to the theme.
• Another popular type is graffiti style which
is being done in offices these days.
Fabric
• Fabrics like wool, cotton, burlap are used.
• Fabrics can be applied on the wall using an
adhesive and can also be hung directly.
• They also require a back coating to prevent
the bleeding of adhesive through the
fabrics face and to improve dimensional
stability.
Cork
• Cork from the renewable bark of the cork
oak tree is used.
• It is durable and resilient.
• It has excellent acoustic properties.
• It can be finished with either wax or
polyurethane.
Laminates
• Laminates are available in various colors
and designs.
• It comes in the form of sheet and is pasted
using an adhesive on plywood.
Metals
• Metals are being used extensively as wall
treatments these days.
• These are available in the form of metal
panels and tiles.
• The most popular finishes include
stainless steel, copper and brass.
• These can be used in modern style
interiors.
Mirrors
• Designer mirrors are placed on walls to
create mural like designs.
• These are available in the form of tiles and
panels.
• Using mirror as a wall treatment also
helps in creating an illusion of space in
interiors.
