SDG 11: SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

OVERPOPULATION, MIGRATION FROM RURAL

G TO URBAN, SLUM SETTLEMENTS

PROBLEMATIQUE

What are the policies that can be implemented to

1 address the adverse effects of pollution in the cities?

How can the government aid the conflict between

continuous conversion of land to residential and
2 industrial use, and the SDG target to provide a
green environment for the people in the city?

How can land transportation and the issues in traffic

3 be strategically solved?

Introduction
METHODOLOGY
OF FORMATION
• having “The Green Machine” where plastic wastes can
be turned into fuel

• introduction of using the “Hydroponics, Aquaponics and

Aeroponics as growing methods”

• upgrading, rejuvenating and empowering rail transport by

reviving the operation of the Philippine National Railways
(PNR) Bicol Express

• annual report index prepared by the United 4 Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC)
THEORETICAL FOUNDATION

Investment: the highlight of GGSS TONDO

10 Principles of Economics by Gregory Mankiw

• Principle #1: People Face Tradeoffs
• Principle #2: The Cost of Something is What You Give
Up to Get It
• Principle #3: Rational People Think at the Margin.
• Principle #4: People Respond to Incentives
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

It centers on environment, the welfare of

the people in the society, and economic
aspect

Quality of life
DISCUSSIONS
Discussion
• Assumption
• Argument
• Importance
• Criticism
• Theoretical Contribution

Research Methodology | 20
Assumptions
• A strengthen collaboration between citizens,
businesses, and government towards economic
development and a progressive technological
intervention;

• By 2020, ensures an efficient and realistic plan of

transforming converted-commercial lands to a
space not only for catering citizens and businesses
but as well a part allocated for the achievement of
environmental sustainability amidst urbanization;

Research Methodology | 20
Assumptions
• By 2030, a significant attainment in the adoption of
the proper patterns of practice regarding the
production, consumption, and disposal of waste of
the citizens, government, and businesses to a more
sustainable system of cities and communities;

• By 2030, ensures a substantial decrease in the solid-

waste emission particularly in the urban regions of
this developing country;

Research Methodology | 20
Assumptions
• By 2030, a reduction of pollution by 20% in Tondo, Manila
which was where the Philippines Sustainability Challenge
has first started;

• By 2030, a substantial achievement in the transformation

of cities and communities and restoration of
environmental resources

Research Methodology | 20
Argument
• Theories
• Neoclassical economists
“sustainability and development can both exist in a
juxtaposition without having to contradict each other

• Malthusian Theory
“with scarce resources and overpopulated cities,
development will be far from being accomplished”

• Tragedy of the Commons

“the resources become scarce because of personal use
that the demand outweighs the supply”
Research Methodology | 19
• Cities that attainment both sustainability and
development:
• San Francisco
home of the top technological companies
like Salesforce, Airbnb, Uber, and Twitter

• Taylor Farms and the city of Gonzales, California

known for their innovative energy and a cogeneration facility that uses
cleaner natural gas to produce power

• Other greenest cities are Copenhagen, Vancouver,

Stockholm, and Singapore

Research Methodology | 19
Importance
• To the Citizens;
• To Businesses;
• To the Government; and
• To the society as a whole

Research Methodology | 19
Theoretical Contribution
• sustainability and development are
contributory to the attainment of each other

• a simultaneous economic, social and

environmental enrichment

Research Methodology | 19
Criticism
• The achievement of this plan is dependent upon the
participation of all the agents of the society, and thus the
failure of any agent to comply and contribute to the plan
proper will render this development plan unattainable.

• The uncertainty of the availability of funds or sources to gain

the needed funds to meet the probable cost of carrying out
the proposed plans by this policy.

Research Methodology | 19
Criticism
• The allocation of the country’s funds can also be a hindrance
and thus must be observed and be done efficiently and
properly as the lack of the resources to carry out this plan will
render this plan’s effectivity useless.

• Not all citizens are willing to embrace the changes brought

by technological advancement.

• In addressing the problem in transportation, the proposal of

this policy to restore and improve the existing public
transportation is pro-consumer and can cause a negative
impact to other people’s means of living including some
public drivers.

CONCLUSION and
RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSION

• Pollution due to the increasing population in urban areas will be

lessened or eliminated through adoption and proper implementation
of the patterns of practice as suggested by the Go for Growth!
Sustainable and Strong Towards One Nation Development
Operations (GGSS TONDO);
CONCLUSION

• Development and promotion of hydroponics as smart farming

technique will address the continuous and increasing number of
conversion of land into residential and industrial that will reduce the
possibility of having green cities since there are not enough space to
plant trees and grow plants;
CONCLUSION

• Lastly, the traffics caused by the increasing demand of land

transportation in the cities are one of the main problems. Since road
widening is now an impossible solution to heavy traffics due to the
unplanned location of the buildings and houses in the cities, one of
the policies of GGSS TONDO is to create a subway train which will
lessen and improve the traffics in different cities in the country.
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Find alternative and creative solution to the criticism mentioned so
that gaps and holes of this policy will be able to fill in such as the
involvement and use of Technology. The enhancement of the policy
is contributive and essential so that the whole concept will be firm
and strong.

• Since not all of the cities in the Philippines are not suited for some of
the given sub-policies, bestow suggestions on how these cities will be
able to fully apply the given strategies.
RECOMMENDATIONS

• One of the facets that this policy got the chance to view is that, the
government should consider to create more jobs in rural areas so
that urban migration and population concentration in the cities will
be lessen. Let the job and income opportunities for the people be
accessed by those in the rural areas so that they won’t be needing
to relocate.
