What is sensor?

What is a sensor?
 A sensor is a device which detects or
measures a physical property and
records, indicates it responds
according to it.
What is wireless sensor networks?

 communicate different devices using wireless links

 information is forwarded through multiple nodes,
using gateway technology
 Data transfer to other networks using Ethernet
 pass data through the network to a main location
Ad hoc networks:

 A network that can communicates devices with

each other directly
 The term implies spontaneous or impromptu
construction because these networks often bypass
the gate keeping hardware or central access point
such as a router or switch.
 temporary computer-to-computer connection.
 set up a wireless connection directly to another
computer without connecting to Wi-Fi or router.
Sensor networks applications:
Applications

These networks are used in environmental tracking,

such as
o forest detection
o animal tracking
o flood detection
o forecasting
o weather prediction.
Health applications:
o monitoring of patients
Transport system applications:
o monitoring of traffic
o dynamic routing management
o monitoring of parking lots
Military Applications
o Tracking and monitoring surveillance
o Enemy tracking
o security detections
Advantages of WSN:
o Avoids a lot of wiring.
o Accommodate new devices at any time..
o Flexible to go through physical partitions.
o It can be accessed through a centralized monitor.
Limitations of Wireless Sensor Networks

o Small storage capacity – a few hundred kilobytes

o Lowest processing power-8MHz
o short communication range
o consumes a lot of power
o constrains protocols
o batteries with a finite life time
conclusion

The application of WSN in the areas of biomedical,

intelligent parking, healthcare applications,
environmental, industrial, and military applications
have been briefed. These interesting applications
are possible due to the flexibility, fault tolerance, low
cost and rapid deployment characteristics of sensor
networks. Though wireless sensor networks are
constrained by scalability, cost, topology change
and power consumption, new technologies are
being devised to overcome these and to make
sensor networks an integral part of our lives. The
future prospects of WSN applications are highly
promising to revolutionize our everyday lives.
