Introduction
• Words Their Way is a hands-on
developmentally approach to word study. It
helps students develop phonics,
vocabulary, and spelling skills.
• Words Their Way is a differentiated
spelling program that identifies, groups
and then meets students at their
developmentally appropriate spelling
stage.
Spelling Stages

o Letter Name Alphabetic
o Word Within Word Pattern
o Syllables and Affixes
o Derivational Relations
* Each stage divided into early, middle & late
(Program has a collection of lists/word sorts for each
stage)
Word Study
Supports CA ELA Common Core
• Common Core State Standards are
listed for each activity. Words Their Way
supports the Reading Foundational Skills
and the Language Standards across all
ages. It supports the Common Core’s
emphasis on reading complex text.
Provides Classroom Activities
• Words Their Way offers teachers classroom
activities for students to help build the skills
needed in order to move to the next
developmental spelling stage.
Ex. PDToolkit
– Video clips to show teachers how to use word study at
all stages of development; including EL learners
– Includes prepared word sorts and games
– Allows teachers to create their own sorts to meet the
needs of students
