There are many ways to compare fractions. One way is illustrating the fractions
before comparing. Consider the problem below:
Paul has ½ pizza while Tricia has 3/5 pizza. Who has the bigger size of pizza?
3/5 has the bigger part than ½ .
Therefore, Tricia has the bigger size of pizza. We can
simply write:
I got ____
out of 3
3)
5
.
We can also compare fractions by changing the Dissimilar Fractions to Similar
Fractions . Answer this problem:
Mang Ben has 1/2 hectare of rice field while Mang Mael has 2/3 hectare of it.
Who has the biggest size of rice field? 1/2 and 2/3 are Dissimilar fractions. We can change them
to Similar Fractions by getting the Least Common Denominator (LCD). LCD is 6
1/2
1/2 2/3
2/3
3/6 4/6
Mang Ben Mang Mael Therefore, 1/2 is less than 2/3
or
1/2 = 3/6 2/3 = 4/6
Mang Mael then has a bigger size of
rice field than Mang Ben.

Try this: Compare the fractions in the window
pane. Form the Similar Fractions before
comparing , using the LCD on the wheel.
