Scope of the work

1. To study general mechanism of corrosion.

2. To study effect of corrosion of reinforcement on

performance of Reinforced Concrete building.
Introduction
• Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is a major problem.

• An electrochemical process.

• Volume increase in steel and concrete interface ≈ 6 to 10 times.

• Disadvantage:
a. Cracks,
b. Cover spalling,
c. Loss of bond between concrete and bars,
d. Ductility loss and
e. Reduction of life of structures

Work done so far
1. Studied general corrosion process
2. Relevant papers

• Inci P., Goksu C., Ilki A., & Kumbasar N. (2012). “Effects
of reinforcement corrosion on the performance of RC
frame buildings subjected to seismic actions”
• Numerical study.

• Depth of corrosion and its distribution along the

reinforcement were taken from previous experimental
results.

• 10 hypothetical building were considered for assessing its

seismic performance under corrosion damage.

• 6 different earthquake data were used for time history

analysis.

Pushover Analysis

• Lateral loads were assumed to act proportionally through the

height.
• Lateral-load capacity of the structure was reduced .
• Lateral-displacement capacity was also reduced.

Nonlinear Time-History Analyses
• Analysis of building was done under 6 different earthquakes.

• Maximum drift ratios for first stories of buildings is shown in table:

Conclusion
• The strains obtained from these two analysis were different but
the overall structural seismic performance levels determined by
both analyses were generally in agreement.

• Proper consideration of corrosion in reinforcing bars is extremely

important for seismic safety assessment of existing buildings.

• The main negative effect of corrosion on strength is the

reduction in diameter of rebar, whereas its negative effect on
displacement capacity comes from concentration of pits.
• Li H., Li B., Jin R., Li S., & Yu, J. G. (2018). “Effects of
sustained loading and corrosion on the performance
of reinforced concrete beams”
• Analyzed 13 RC beam under sustain loading and corrosion of
reinforcement simultaneously.

• Three corrosion durations were considered- 0, 5, 10 and 20 days.

• Four levels of sustain loading- 0, 15%, 30% and 60% of ultimate load
capacity was applies to beams.

• Faraday’s law

𝑊𝐼𝑡
𝑚=
𝐹

Where m is the mass loss of reinforcement per unit of surface area;

I is the applied current density;
t is the corrosion duration;
W and F are the equivalent weight of steel and the Faraday’s constant,
respectively.
Results and Conclusion
• At advanced level of corrosion, pitting corrosion was found.

• Sectional area loss has more significance than mass loss.

• Increment in loading would not increase the crack width caused by
the reinforcement corrosion, but increase the length of longitudinal
cracks.

• Corrosion rate is fastest between 15% and 30% loading.

• The corroded beam with 29.01% section area loss in reinforcements

fails in the brittle manner.

• Loading capacity and deformation ability reduces as sustain loading
and corrosion periods increased.

• Increasing the corrosion level of reinforcements initially enhances the

flexural stiffness and ultimately decreases for beams under severe
corrosion.

Work to be done
• Analysis of change in properties of steel bars due to
corrosion of reinforcement.

• Analysis of adverse effect of corrosion of rebars on concrete

properties.

• Study the performance of RC buildings under the action of

corrosion.
