 Work to be done
“A materials system composed of two or more
physically distinct phases whose combination
produces aggregate properties that are different
from those of its constituents”.
Reinforcement
Materials
• Matrix Material: Aluminium (Al6061) alloy is used as the matrix
material. Aluminium and magnesium alloys are regarded as widely
used matrices due to low density and high thermal conductivity.

• Reinforced Material: The material used as the reinforced is silicon

carbide (SiC). SiC reinforced AMC shows maximum wear
resistances, tensile strength and compressive strength.
• Identify the matrix materials by literature survey.
• Identification of gap of reinforced material by
literature survey.
• Identification of casting technique
• Casting the given aluminium metal matrix
composite by stir casting technique
• To study the mechanical properties
• The stir casting experimental setup used for
fabricating of Al- SiC MMC
• The reinforcing phases are distributed into
molten matrix by mechanical stirring.
• A stirrer positioned at the top of the furnace
is used to mixing the reinforcement in the
molten metal.
• Al6061 billets were charged into the furnace
and melting was allowed to progress until a
uniform temperature of 750ᵒC was attained.
• The Molten metal is mixed with preheated
SiC and additives were added.
• Mechanical Stirring is Carried out for 10 minutes at the rate of 150rpm of
temperature 830ᵒ C
After casting the work piece is machined by lathe in
required dimensions of 20mm dia and 75 mm length for
tensile test, 20mm dia and 25 mm length for Compression
test, 20mm dia and 20 mm length for Hardness test and
10mm x10mm x 150mm for impact test as shown in the fig
Different Testing
Tensile Test
This test was performed to find out the yield strength, ultimate strength
and percentage of elongation of the composite. The test was performed
on the UTM. The results were plotted in the graph which clearly
indicates that tensile strength of aluminium reinforced with SiC is higher
than that of unreinforced aluminium. And shows the samples after the
break the specimens.

Hardness Test
The Brinell hardness test was performed to measure the hardness of the
specimens as per the ASTM standard. A force of 500kg was applied on
the specimens by indenter of diameter 5mm for 10 seconds. Four
samples of Al-SiC MMC’s particles were prepared. Figures shows
samples after test and hardness. The Brinell hardness values with
reference to scale BHN were taken for all samples.

Impact Test
Charpy impact test was performed to determine the
resistance of the specimens against shocks or sudden
forces. The energy absorbed is determined in joules. This
absorbed energy is a measure of the impact strength of a
material.

Compression Test
This test was performed to find out the Compression strength of the
composite. The test was performed on the UTM. which clearly indicates
that compression strength of aluminium reinforced with SiC is higher
than that of unreinforced aluminium in the fig.
