Simulation of Airflow around

different shaped buildings

Presented By
Vivek Sharma
Motivation
 Buildings have various shapes -
pentagonal, hexagonal,
rectangular, circular etc.
 The shape depends on the
wind effects. Drag and lift play
an important role in
determining the shapes.
 The various shapes also
improve the aesthetic
appearance.
Drag Force

 Drag is a force acting opposite to the relative motion of any object moving
with respect to the surrounding fluid.

 As the Surface area increases the Drag Forces also increases.

 So if the Wind Load is more, the building is designed in such a shape so as
to minimize the effect of Wind.
Numerical Simulation
using ANSYS

 ANSYS is software based on

Computational Fluid Dynamics.
 The Wind forces hit the center of the
building with the maximum intensity.
 At the side the wind forces get
deflected. So the effect of Drag is
Reduced.
Drag Coefficient and Pressure
Variations
Result

 As the Number of Sides

increases the Drag
Coefficient Decreases.
 The Wind Forces acting on
the building also
decreases.
 The Wind Forces can’t be
ignored and must be kept
in mind while designing.
