 Data: Facts, a description of the World
 Information: Captured Data and Knowledge
 Knowledge: Our personal map/model of the
World
 The term Business Intelligence
(BI) refers to technologies, applications
and practices for the collection,
integration, analysis, and presentation of
business information.
 DATA MINING is the important part of BI
 data mining is the process of sorting
through data to find the patterns, trends
and relationships
With Data Mining Business Organizations are able to
make more accurate business decisions and incur
more profits. From business, marketing advertising
and introduction of new products or services, and
everything in between. Data mining draws the results
to:
 Improve customer loyalty
 Find hidden profitability
 Reduce Client Churn
 Future Healthcare
 Manufacturing Engineering
 CRM
 Fraud Detection
 Financial Banking
 Research Analysis
 Criminal Investigation
and many more
 DATA INTEGRATION
 DATA SELECTION
 DATA CLEANING
 DATA TRANSFORMATION
 DATA MINING
 PATTERN EVALUATION
 KNOWLEDGE PRESENTATION
 Data Integration: First of all the data are collected and integrated from all the
different sources.
 Data Selection: We may not want all the data we have collected in the first step.
So in this step we select only those data which we think useful for data mining.
 Data Cleaning: The data we have collected are not clean and may contain errors,
missing values, noisy or inconsistent data. So we need to apply different
techniques to get rid of such anomalies.
 Data Transformation: The data even after cleaning are not ready for mining as we
need to transform them into forms appropriate for mining. The techniques used to
accomplish this are smoothing, aggregation, normalization etc.
 Data Mining: Now we are ready to apply data mining techniques on the data to
discover the interesting patterns. Techniques like clustering and association
analysis are among the many different techniques used for data mining.
 Pattern Evaluation and Knowledge Presentation: This step involves
visualization, transformation, removing redundant patterns etc. from the patterns
we generated. Decisions / Use of Discovered Knowledge: This step helps user to
make use of the knowledge acquired to take better decisions.

 SEQUENTIAL PATTERNS
 DECISIONS TREES
 Classification:This analysis is used to retrieve important and relevant
information about data, and metadata. This data mining method helps to
classify data in different classes.
 Clustering:Clustering analysis is a data mining technique to identify data
that are like each other. This process helps to understand the differences
and similarities between the data.
 Association Rules:This data mining technique helps to find the association
between two or more Items. It discovers a hidden pattern in the data set.
 Sequential Patterns:This data mining technique helps to discover or
identify similar patterns or trends in transaction data for certain period.
 Prediction: Prediction has used a combination of the other data mining
techniques like trends, sequential patterns, clustering, classification, etc. It
analyzes past events or instances in a right sequence for predicting a future
event.

 A data warehouse is a subject oriented,
integrated, time-variant, and non-volatile
collection of data. This data helps analysts
to take informed decisions in an
organization.
