It consists of all persons lineally descended from
a common ancestor and includes their wives,
widows and unmarried daughters.

Mitakshara Joint Family
Mitakshara owes its name to Vijnaneshwara’s
commentary on the Yajnavalkya smriti by the
name of Mitakshara. The school prevails in the
whole of India except Bengal and Assam.
Dayabhaga Joint Family
• Applicable in the State of Bengal and Assam
• Jamutvahana,the author of dayabhaga that no
joint family in this school in the sense exists.
