Apartheid
In 1948, racial discrimination
was institutionalized in South
Africa. Race laws touched
every aspect of social life,
including a prohibition of
marriage between non-whites
and whites, and the
sanctioning of ``white-only''
jobs.

The political system in which
human beings are treated
differently based on the colour
of their skin.
Mandela served as
President of South Africa
from 1994 to 1999.
He got this position after
spending 30 years in prison
for fighting against the
legacy of apartheid.
He was South Africa's first
black chief executive, and
the first elected in a
democratic election

 In the inauguration ceremony a troop of South African jets
,helicopters roared in perfect formation over the Union Buildings .
Afterwards Nelson Mandela spoke to the gathering about the
sufferings of common man in South Africa and that how the policy of
Apartheid created a deep and lasting wound in their country. He
talked about the courage and struggle of comrades that every time
he has seen men & women risk and give their lives for an idea .
 “I was not born with a hunger to be free . I was born
free free in every way that I could know . It was only when I began
to learn that my boyhood freedom was an illusion. “
 “It was this desire for the freedom of my people to
live their lives with dignity and self-respect that animated my life . I
am not truly free if I am taking away some one else’s freedom, just
as surely I am not free when my freedom is taken from me . The
oppressor and oppressed alike are robbed their humanity “.
