WHAT’S THE LEXICAL
APPROACH
The lexical approach is a method of teaching foreign
languages described by Michael Lewis in the 1993. The
basic concept on which this approach rests is the idea
that an important part of learning a language consists of
being able to understand and produce lexical phrases as
chunks.
Or
The lexical approach is a way of analysing and teaching
language based on the idea that it is made up of lexical
unit rather than grammatical structures The units are
words and chunks formed by collocations and fixed
phrases.
APPROACH
• No learning theory
• No theory of language
• The building blocks of language learning and
communication are not grammar, functions or
some of unit of planning but teaching lexis
with the help of chunks and collocations
The content for teaching Lexical
Approach :

 Chunk
 Collocations
 Fixed phrases
 Idiom
Video what’s chunks?
Example :
Monas National Monumen is a 132 m
tower in the center of Merdeka square,
Central Jakarta, Indonesia. Jakarta is the
capital of the state.
LEWIS’S ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT LEARNING
THEORY IN THE
LEXICAL APPROACH:

 Encountering new learning items

 Noticing lexical chunks or collocations
 Noticing similarities, differences, restrictions and
examples
 Acquisition is based not on the application of
formal rules
 No linear syllabus can adequately reflect the
nonlinear nature of acquisition
