TWO DIMENSIONAL

DRAWING
BY

Dr. Rajesh Panda

STO-CAD/CAM-CIPET.
WHAT IS 2D?

Creating a Drawing in the X and Y

coordinates on a plane or paper is
termed to be a two-dimensional
drafting.
2D

• In 2D drawing distances are measured

from the origin of two axis (X & Y).
• The axes could be fixed during the
creation of elements (absolute mode).
• There may be an option for the
automatic shifting of axes, so that
distances are measured from the end of
each successive element (incremental
mode).
THREE BASIC CAD TOOLS

1.Creation tools

2.Editing tools

3.Aid or support tools

1.CREATION TOOLS

The tools used to create the geometry

are called creation tools.
1.Creation tools

Two types of creation tools are;

a. Analytical entities.
b. Synthetic entities.
a. Analytical entities.
• Points
• Lines
• Arcs
• Circle
• Rectangle
• Polygon &
• Conics (ellipse, parabola & hyperbola).
b. Synthetic entities

• Spline by points
• Spline by poles
2. EDITING TOOLS

Tools or options used to edit or modify

the 2D curves are called editing tools
2. EDITING TOOLS
Some of the commonly used editing tools are:
• Move or translate • Fillet
• Copy or Duplicate • Chamfer
• Cut • Trim or break
• Paste • Extend
• Offset • Stretch
• Scale • Delete or remove or erase &
• Mirror • Divide or split
• Array
• Rotate
3. Aid or support tools

Tools which supports the geometric

modelling or curve creation is called
aid tools (or) tools used to enhance the
geometry creation.
3. AID OR SUPPORT TOOLS
Main division of the common aid tools
are:

1. Direct Geometry support

2. Graphical display support
3. Drafting support
a. Direct Geometry support
Some of the common direct aid tools are;

• Undo • User Defined Features

• Redo • Macros
• Grids • Selection methods
• Layers • Colors
• Snap • Relations or Expressions
• Boolean • Animation &
• Grouping • Drawing trees
• Hatching or area filling
b. Graphical display support
Some of the common Graphics aid tools are;

• Visualization
• Boundary setting or windowing
• Fit
• Zoom
• Limits
• Pan and
• Rotating the screen
c. Draft support

• Dimension
• Text
• Annotations or notes or labels
• Symbols
• Bill of Material or Part list to the geometry and
• Title block and border.
Advantages of Computer Aided 2D Drawing

1.2D drawing requires less computer

memory.
2.It reduces the drawing time by
approximately 1/5 times compared to
manual drawing.
3.Drawings made from CAD systems are
having better accuracy than manual one.
4.Modification and editing of the drawing is
easy compared to manual one.
5.Drawing presentation is so good and neat
when compared to manual one.
Disadvantages of 2D Drawing

• It is not possible to get the properties such

as volume of the part , mass properties,
centre of gravity, moment of inertia, etc. of
the part.
• The understanding of the 2D drawing
makes difficulties in case of complex parts.
• Workers should have good knowledge of
Orthographics projections in Engineering
drawing.
