disadvantages of Milking machine

Milking Machine
 Milking machine design and function is critical for
rapid and efficient removal of milk without damage to
the teat or gland.
 Minimal risk for transmitting pathogenic
microorganisms that might cause mastitis
Principle of Milking Machine
¤ Its based on Vacuum supply(Negative pressure) and Pulsation.
¤ Vacuum supply(Negative pressure) = 11-14 inches of Hg
¤ Pulsation rate= 50-60 cycle per minute
¤ Negative pressure and Pulsation helps to remove and move down
milk from udder.
¤ Negative pressure open the teat canal through partial vacuum.
¤ Pulsation also help in massages the teat.

Types of Milking Machine
¤ Hand operated Milking Machine
Mechanically operated by handle

¤ Electric Motor Operated Milking Machine

Electrically Operated by motor
Generally use in small dairy farm
Applying of Machine And Precaution
¤ Regularity of time and routine required.
¤ Before starting milking properly wash udder and
teats with clean water.
¤ Massage the cow’s udder and Dry udder and teats.
¤ Use strip cup to remove few streams of milk.
¤ Applying teat cups and checking teat cup placement .
proper or not.
.
Machine-on time :
¤ Maximal intra mammary pressure caused by milk
letdown occurs at about one minute after udder
preparation begins and continues for about 5 minutes.
¤ Most cows will milk out in 5 to 7 minutes
Detaching the machine at the end of milking
¤ The vacuum must be turned off before the machine is
removed.
¤ Otherwise, pulling on the teat cups while the vacuum is
still on may cause trauma to the teat ends.
¤ Shut off vacuum and remove unit when milk flow.
NOTE:-
¤ Washing the machine between every milking.
¤ Treated and sick cows shall always be milked separately
and after all the healthy cows.
Benefits of the Machine Milking
¤ First of all, it allows the dairy farm to increase their
activity with a larger herd.
¤ In machine milking the peak yield is achieved
quicker and remain longer so total yield is more.
¤ Its avoid contamination of outside –bacteria and
foreign material.
Benefits of the Machine Milking
¤ Minimum irritation to the udder, teats and tissues.
¤ Its easy to operate ,save time and labour expenses.
¤ Prevent invasion of external organisms .
¤ Proper milking machinery can manage herds faster
while ensuring the quality of the milk.
¤ Milking machinery also reduces the farm’s dependency
on workers.
Disadvantages of Milking Machinery
¤The most obvious disadvantage will come with older
cattle. That's normally used to hand milking.
¤Older cows will have trouble adjusting to automatic
milking machinery.
¤ This may increase their stress levels and reduce their
milk quantity and quality.
Disadvantages of Milking Machinery

 ¤Secondly, the machinery will need a constant

supply of electricity.
 ¤This means that in cases of damages to the
power supply system the dairy farm will not be
able to operate properly.
 ¤ Its also require emergency power supply systems.
 ¤ Milking machinery require strict cleaning
procedures.
 ¤ Because of improperly cleaned machinery can lead
to infections.
