ABOUT DHIRUBHAI AMBANI
• Dhirajlal "Dhirubhai" Hirachand Ambani (28 December 1932 – 6 July 2002)
was an Indian business tycoon who founded Reliance Industries in Bombay
• When he was 16 years old, he moved to Aden,Yemen. Initially, Dhirubhai worked
as a dispatch clerk with A. Besse & Co. He also worked in Dubai for sometime
• Curious to learn the tricks of the trade, he soon started working simultaneously for a
Gujarati trading firm. It was there that he learnt accounting, book keeping and
preparing shipping papers and documents. He also acquired the skill of dealing with
banks and insurance companies.
• Soon he took to speculative trading, in all sorts of goods and made profitable deals,
he was then promoted to the oil filling station at the newly built harbour. It was
therein that thoughts of building a refinery first shaped his dream.
ABOUT DHIRUBHAI AMBANI

• Dhirubhai returned to India and founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation with
an initial capital of Rs.15000
• Dhirubhai set up the business in partnership with Champaklal Damani from whom
he parted ways in 1965
• Since he could not make large investments, he settled as a spice trader under the
name Reliance Commercial Corporations. He soon started trading spices, sugar,
jaggery, betel nuts and such to Gulf Emirates.
• He focused on low profits, high volumes and rich quality.
• The Sunday Times figured him as one of the top 50 businessmen in Asia
• Dhirubhai Amani is credited with having started the equity cult in India.

• In 2016, he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest
civilian honour for his contributions in trade and industry
• Ambani handed over control of Reliance to his sons, Mukesh and Anil on 1986.
• A Hindi film said to be loosely inspired by the life of Dhirubhai Ambani was
released on 12 January 2007. Guru, directed by filmmaker Mani Ratnam,
cinematography by Rajiv Menon and music by A.R.Rahman shows the struggle of a
man striving to make his mark in the Indian business world with a fictional Shakti
Group of Industries.

1960s as Reliance Commercial Corporation

• In 1966, Reliance Textiles Industries Pvt Ltd was incorporated in Maharashtra
• In 1975, the company expanded its business into textiles, with "Vimal" becoming its
major brand
• In 2001, Reliance Industries Ltd. and Reliance Petroleum Ltd. became India's two
largest companies in terms of all major financial parameters
• In 2001–02, Reliance Petroleum was merged with Reliance Industries
• In 2006, Reliance entered the organised retail market in India

• January 2016- Awarded Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-highest civilian
award posthumously.
• October 2011-Awarded posthumously the ABLF Global Asian Award at the Asian
Business Leadership Forum Awards.
• November 2000–Conferred Man of the Century award by Chemtech Foundation and
Chemical Engineering World in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the
growth and development of the chemical industry in India.
• June 1998 – "Dean's Medal" by The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania,
for setting an outstanding example of leadership.
• Dhirubhai Ambani was named the "Man of 20th Century" by the Federation of
Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
• A poll conducted by The Times of India in 2000 voted him "Greatest Creator of
Wealth in the Centuries".
