INTRODUCTION
• Orifice meter is an variable head meter
• Orifice meter measures the pressure drop
with the help of which we calculate the flow
rate of the fluid
• The mass flow rate equation is:
G=CdAoPsquare root2gho
Types
• Concentric orifice plate
• Eccentric orifice plate
• Segmental orifice plate
CONCENTRIC ORIFICE PLATE

• Used for ideal fluids as well as gases

• Used for steam service
• Beta ratio for liquids is 0.15 to 0.75
• Beta ratio for gases is 0.2 to 0.70
ECCENTRIC ORIFICE PLATE

• It has a bore offset from center

• Used for liquids containing solids
• Used for oil containing water
• Used for wet steam
SEEGMENTAL ORIFICE PLATE

• It has a bore in form of a segment

• Used for colloidal solutions
• Used for slurries
• Tap location should be 180 from centre of tangency

Working
• On flowing the fluid through the meter there
will be an increase in velocity and decrease in
the pressure. The rate of flow is then
measured at the expense of pressure drop.

LIMITATIONS
• The orifice meter is recommended for clean
liquids
• Recommended for some dirty liquids
• Recommended for some slurries
ADVANTAGES
• The pressure loss is medium
• The viscosity effect is high
• The relative cost is low
• Continuous measurement of fluid flow in
pipes
