WHAT IS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with chemical

production and the manufacture of products through chemical processes. This
includes designing equipment, systems and processes for refining raw materials
and for mixing, compounding and processing chemicals to make valuable
products. Chemical engineering is all about changing raw materials into useful
products such as clothes, food and drink, and energy. Chemical engineers focus
on processes and products – they develop and design processes to create
products; either focusing on improving existing processes or creating new ones.
WHAT DO CHEMICAL ENGINEERS DO?

Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics and math
to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs,
food and many other products. They design processes and equipment for large-
scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods and byproducts
treatment, and direct facility operations. They may work at a petroleum refinery
to turn crude oil into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, lubricating oil, solvents and
petrochemicals; at a fertilizer plant to produce ammonium nitrate, or at a
personal-care product manufacturer to mix dozens of ingredients to produce
shampoo or skin lotion.
IS CHEMICAL ENGINEERING HARD?

• Chemical engineering is undeniably challenging – it involves a lot of physics and

maths and is likely to involve a high number of exams at degree level. However,
it is also varied and interesting and if you are comfortable with the scientific
requirements, committed to persevering and genuinely interested in the
subject you are likely to succeed.
HISTORY OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
• Industrial chemistry was being practised in the mid 1800s, but it was not until the 1880s that the
engineering elements required to control chemical processes were being recognized as a distinct
professional activity. Chemical engineering was first established as a profession in the United
Kingdom when the first chemical engineering course was given at the University of Manchester in
1887 by George E. Davis in the form of twelve lectures covering various aspects of industrial
chemical practice. As a consequence George E. Davis is regarded as the world's first chemical
engineer. Today, chemical engineering is a highly regarded profession. Chemical engineers with
experience can become licensed Professional Engineers in the United States, aided by the National
Society of Professional Engineers, or gain "Chartered" chemical-engineer status through the UK-
based Institution of Chemical Engineers.
IMPORTANT QUALITIES FOR CHEMICAL
ENGINEERS
• Analytical skills. Chemical engineers must troubleshoot designs that do not work as planned. They
must ask the right questions and then find answers that work.
• Creativity. Chemical engineers must explore new ways of applying engineering principles. They work
to invent new materials, advanced manufacturing techniques, and new applications in chemical and
biomedical engineering.
• Ingenuity. Chemical engineers learn the broad concepts of chemical engineering, but their work
requires them to apply those concepts to specific production problems.
• Interpersonal skills. Because their role is to put scientific principles into practice in manufacturing
industries, chemical engineers must develop good working relationships with other workers involved in
production processes.
• Math skills. Chemical engineers use the principles of advanced math topics such as calculus for
analysis, design, and troubleshooting in their work.
• Problem-solving skills. In designing equipment and processes for manufacturing, these engineers must
be able to anticipate and identify problems, including such issues as workers' safety and problems
related to manufacturing and environmental protection.
DUTIES OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS
• Conduct research to develop new and improved manufacturing processes
• Establish safety procedures for those working with dangerous chemicals
• Develop processes for separating components of liquids and gases, or for
generating electrical currents, by using controlled chemical processes
• Design and plan the layout of equipment
• Conduct tests and monitor the performance of processes throughout
production
• Troubleshoot problems with manufacturing processes
WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING?
• Employment of chemical engineers will grow 4 percent from 2012 to 2022,
slower than the average for all occupations. "Demand for chemical engineers'
services depends largely on demand for the products of various manufacturing
industries. There should still be many opportunities for highly qualified
applicants, particularly those who have kept abreast of the latest developments
in technology.
