A SECRET PLACE
YEAR 8
Lesson 1
Learning objective: To understand ‘genre’ and
practice writing in different styles
What we will be doing
 Build on skills from year 6
 Write your own story
 Need to consider;
 What makes a good story
 Techniques other writers use
 Skills you can use in your own writing
 Editing your text
What is your target?
 First
set a target for your writing, what do
you want to improve from year 7?
Plan you will use for your writing
Story Starters
 Read the following extracts, what can we
assume about how the rest of the story
might be?
 Think about
 Genre
 Tone
 Atmosphere
 Characters
Extract One
 Dark clouds scudded
across the moon as a
small girl hurried
anxiously along the
path. Her footsteps
seemed to echo in the
shadows. Suddenly
she stopped…
listened…
Extract Two
 Rosietossed her auburn hair restlessly
and gazed out of the window. Why hadn’t
Roger returned her call? Maybe Jackie
was right to warn her that he was a bit of a
wolf…
Extract Three
 Monday: granny
started going dead
weird on me. She’s
got this terrible
moustache. So
embarrassing! What
on earth will Sophie
say if she calls
round? And she
keeps wanting me to
snuggle up close to
her…
Extract Four
 “Oh,come on you lot, don’t be so jolly
boring! I vote we take a short cut through
the woods,” urged Peter. “Sammy would
love a good run….”
Extract Five
 Once, not twice, but
once upon a time, in
the land where the
East meets West, and
North meets South,
which is nowhere,
everywhere and here,
there lived a foxy
gentleman…
Extract Six
 Werewolves are only found in kid’s tales.
Ruth reminded herself of this fact, not for
the first time, as she made her way down
the dark alleyway. But she could still hear
the soft patter of feet behind her, and in
her mind last night’s dream lingered…
Writing Task
 Choose one of the
extracts and continue
the story in the same
style based on what
has been discussed.
(see hand out)
How is reading important for
writing?
 Best writers will be those who read lots of
different types of books
 Steal ideas from books we have read as
well as what we witness in life
 Reading as a writer can help
 What do you think this last point might mean? How can
we read as a a writer?
Homework
 Go to the library and choose a book to
read alongside this topic.
 Read for 20minutes.
 Choose something that you have not read
before, maybe in a type of genre you do
not usually read. This will help you write
an interesting story later in the term.
