INTRODUCTION
The AIRPORT AUTHORITY OF INDIA (AAI) is an organization working under the
ministry of Civil Aviation that manages all the airports in India. AIRPORTS
AUTHORITY OF INDIA (AAI) came to existence on 1st April 1995. It was formed
under the act of parliament (AIRPORT AUTHORITY OF INDIA ACT 1994) by merging
the INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA and NATIONAL AIRPORT
AUTHORITY with a view to accelerate the integrated development, expansion and
modernization of the air traffic service, passenger terminals, operational areas and
cargo facilities at the airport in the country.
The corporate headquarters (CHQ) are at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, Safdarjung airport,
New Delhi.

PURPOSE OF AAI IN BRIEF:

•Passenger handling
•Air traffic management
•Fire rescue services
CNS
(Communication, Navigation and
Surveillance)
COMMUNICATION:- It is process of transferring information from one source to
another. Communication is commonly defined as “the imparting or interchange
of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech , writing, or sign”.
Communication can be perceived as a two-way process. But in civil aviation it is
one-way process. At any time either the controller can speak or the pilot can
speak.

NAVIGATION:- NAVIGATION is the process of reading, and controlling the

movement of craft or vehicle form one place to another. It is also the term of art
used for the specialized knowledge used by navigators to perform navigation
tasks.

SURVEILLANCE:- The Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control

System (A-SMGCS) utilizes multiple Surveillance data sources such as Primary
(PSR) and Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) and Surface Movement Radar

LOCALIZER
PATH
ILS(Instrument Landing System)
ILS is a standard International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
precision landing aid that is used to provide accurate azimuth and
descent guidance signals for guidance to aircraft for landing on the
runway under normal or adverse weather conditions. The ILS
provides the lateral and vertical guidance necessary to fly a precision
approach.
localizer Glide path

provides the central line of provides vertical guidance to a

Range- 25NM Range- 10NM

Frequency range- 108-112 MHz Frequency range- 328-336 MHz

Antenna used – Log

Periodic Dipole Array Antenna used – M Array

Polarization – Horizontal Polarization – Horizontal

Location on Runway –1200-1500ft

from the end of the runway
Location on Runway – 750-1250
ft from the runway threshold
DME(Distance Measuring Equipment)
Range- 25NM
Frequency range- 962-1213 MHz
Guidance provided- distance from landing point
Principle – Secondary RADAR
Polarization – Horizontal
Location on Runway – along with GP
DVOR
( DOPPLER VHF OMNI RANGE )
DVOR is a standard International Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) ground based radio navigational aid
that provides bearing information to aircraft to define air
traffic control routes for en-route, terminal and instrument
approach/departure procedures.
Range-200 km
Frequency range – 112-118 MHz
Guidance provided- Resp. position w.r.t. magnetic north
The principle of DVOR is based on measurement of phase angle
difference of two30 Hz signals radiated by the station at the same
time.
One signal is radiated with the same phase in all directions and the
other signal is radiated with variable phase.
The electric phase angle is measured in the airborne receiver to
identify the azimuth angle (bearing angle).
VHF(Very High Frequency)
VHF Frequency range : 30MHz - 300MHz
VHF Frequency Range ( by ICAO ) : (117.975 - 136.975) MHz
USERS : ATCO (Air Traffic Controllers), Airlines /Defence Pilots.
VHF works on the principle of Line Of Sight.
HF works on the principle of Ground Wave and Sky wave.
FACILITIES/COMPONENTS AVAILABLE
WITH VHF UNIT

VHF Tx, Rx,

VHF J -Controller /Tran receiver.
RCAG (Remote controlled Air to Ground)
DATIS (Digital Airport Terminal Information Services)
VCCS (Voice Communication Control System)
Recording Facilities
VCCS (Voice Communication Control
System)
VCCS controls and connects
together various voice
communication systems used for
Air Traffic Management such as
VHF Tx/RX, telephone, and other
ATC communications. It also
provides an internetworked chain
& backbone for numerous
interfaces acting as an exchange
for all the interfaces put together.
It works on various IT protocols
customized for each set of facility.
DATIS (Digital Airport Terminal Information
Service)
It provides all Terminal information to the Aircraft at regular interval.
It is a software-based system.
Frequency - 126.4 MHz

RECODER
Recording and storage of all voice communications is a basic
requirement for air traffic control units. The requirement applies
to all communication, i.e. ground-ground communications (G/G)
and air-ground communications (A/G).
In vhf two recorders are used one is of RETIA and another is of
RICOCHET company.
