• The test is a 30 minute face to face interview, comprising six parts, all but the

first of which are roleplays:

In a Handbook for candidates , the test takers are told …
• The objetive of the test
• The time allocation
• The structure of the test
• The scoring procedure

During the interview there will be two assessors :


- Interviewed
- Observer

Finally the test takers will have one minute to read the roleplay task before the
beginning.
INPUT
EXPECTED RESPONSE

• The test taker must not only display competence in communicative language
ability, but fulfill the task in a manner cosistent with qualities experinenced tour
guides believe to be characteristic of effective communication in the target
language use situation.
INTERCATION BETWEEN INPUT AND
RESPONSE

• The task is highly reciprocal, in terms of the response and requires some general
background knoledge and common sense.
ASSESSMENT

• It would appear that the tour guides are looking for certain qualities of
personality and interpersonal skills when assessing the communicative ability of
prospective colleagues or trainees. (Brown 1993)
PROFICIENCY TEST IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS (PELA)

• To measure the English language proficiency of trainee air traffic controllers in Europe.

• European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL).


PURPOSE

• Define and assess

• A “ criterial level in ATC English for newly qualifying ATC trainees”

• Owing to the fact that there are established conventions for communication

• International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

• Rules of the air and air traffic services

• The PELA consists of a listening sub-test and a speaking sub-test.


PELA LISTENING TASK
RUBRIC

• They will hear communications between two air traffic control officers (ATCOs) and five

pilots.

• They will hear the recording once only

• The first speaker on the tape is a pilot

• One minute to read the questions before the tape starts.


INPUT

• Genuine recordings of ATCO/pilot radio transmissions with appropriate background noises.

• Headphones and microphones.


EXPECTED RESPONSE
INTERACTION BETWEEN INPUT AND
RESPONSE

• Moderately broad.

• The candidate must listen for specific information in the input.

• The level of interactional authenticity is likely to be fairly high.

• Role-play
• The test taker takes the part of an ATCO and responds orally on a tape recorder to five
different pilots.
INPUT

• Audio and visual

• The audio data is the tape recorded pilot-ATCO communication.

• The visual data is in the form of a ground chart for Birmingham international airport.
EXPECTED RESPONSE

• International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) phraseology in responding to pilot questions.

• They include the test taker demonstrating ability to: give instructions

give or deny approval and permission

give and request reasons
