„Antibiotics in our life” – why they are

important ?
What is an antibiotic?
Antiobiotics - natural secondary products of microorganisms. They are used as a
treatment for all types of bacterial infections

The discovery of the first antibiotic (penicillin) was made in 1928 by Alexander Fleming

Alexander Fleming (born August 6, 1881

in Lochfield near Darvel in East Ayrshire,
died on March 11, 1955 in London) - a
Scottish bacteriologist and doctor.

Soon after the discovery of penicillin, other antibiotics appeared: natural, semi-synthetic
and synthetic. The introduction of antibiotics for treatment was a breakthrough. Until
then, infectious diseases were the cause of the deaths of millions of people.
How do antibiotics work?
The antibiotics work by causing the death of the bacterial cell

Unfortunately, antibiotics can not recognize good and bad bacteria. By killing germs,
they destroy the good ones that are part of the natural bacterial flora and protect us
against various diseases.

Penicilin - structural formula

For example, human cells do not have cell walls, while many types of bacteria do. The
antibiotic penicillin works by keeping a bacterium from building a cell wall. Some
antibiotics dissolve the membrane of just bacterial cells

Do you know that antibiotics can only kill bacteria, so they’re not effective against
viruses like the flu or common cold.
Why are antibiotics not working?
Bacteria quickly learn the antibiotic and learn to defend against it. They use all sorts of
tricks. They change the structure of the cell wall so that the medicine can not tear it
apart, produce special enzymes that break down the antibiotic or "pump it" out of its
interior.

In addition, they multiply very quickly, so they are immune to the given antibiotic and
immediately pass this skill on to their children. As a result, the effective drug has
stopped working so far.

So how ?
Therefore, antibiotics should only be taken if they are really needed (then
they will help us) and not "just in case". They should also be carefully
selected.
So, remember for the future: antibiotics have been
invented to treat certain diseases. Misplaced or
swallowed without any need they can become
even dangerous to OUR health.
