Steam Power Plants

Heat Conduction
A steam power plant
operating on the ideal
Rankine cycle is
considered. The T-s
diagrams of the cycle
for all three cases are
given in Fig.
Find the thermal efficiency of
the cycle.

WAYS TO INCREASE THE
EFFICIENCY OF RANKINE CYCLE
• HOW CAN IT BE ACHIEVED and WHAT DOES IT
SIGNIFIES ? PLease ANSWER.

Engr. Zulfiqar Moor

LOWERING THE CONDENSOR
PRESSURE
• WORK IS INCREASED
• HEAT INPUT IS
INCREASED BUT IT IS
TOO SMALL AS
COMPARED TO
INCREASE IN WORK.
• MORE MOISTURE
CONTENTS
• LIMIT TO LOWER LEVEL

Engr. Zulfiqar Moor

SUPERHEATING
• PRESSURE DOESNOT
CHANGE BUT MORE
SUPER HEATER STAGES
• BENEFITS IN REDUCING
MOISTURE CONTENTS
AT TURBINE EXIT
• MATERIAL
CONSIDERATIONS( MAX
INLET TEMP 620 °C)

A steam power plant operating on the ideal
Rankine cycle is considered. The effects of
superheating the steam to a higher
temperature and raising the boiler pressure
on thermal efficiency are to be investigated.

INCREASE IN BOILER PRESSURE
• INLET CONDITIONS
SAME BUT MOISTURE IS
OF CONCERN.
• THIS IS TAKEN CARE OF
BY REHEATING THE
STEAM? HOW

IDEAL REHEAT RANKINE CYCLE
• EXPAND THE STEAM IN TWO STAGES AND
REHEAT IN BETWEEN
OR
MODIFY IDEAL RANKINE CYCLE WITH A
REHEAT PROCESS
PROBLEM IS INCREASED MOISTURE VS
EFFICIENCY

IDEAL REHEAT RANKINE CYCLE
• Consider a steam power plant operating on the ideal
reheat Rankine cycle. Steam enters the high-pressure
turbine at 15 MPa and 600°C and is condensed in the
condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. If the moisture
content of the steam at the exit of the low-pressure
turbine is not to exceed 10.4 percent, determine
• (a) the pressure at which the steam should be reheated
and
• (b) the thermal efficiency of the cycle. Assume the
steam is reheated to the inlet temperature of the high-
pressure turbine.
