Introduction
In this presentation i will speak about what wireless and wired networks are and
what the differences are between them.
Wireless Network
Wireless networking is a way in which homes, telecommunication
networks and business installations connect to the internet. A wireless
network is a network that uses wireless data connections between network
nodes. Examples of a wireless network:
● Laptop
● Computer
● TV
● Game Consoles
advantages and disadvantages of
wireless network?
Advantages:
Disadvantages:
It is very slow
Expensive
It is insecure
Wired Network
Fibre Optic
Telephone Networks
Internet Access
Cable Television
Advantages and disadvantages of Wired
Network
The Advantages are the following:
Disadvantages:
It is a local area network that is used within schools, colleges, universities and office
buildings. it covers a large geographic distance. Most often, a LAN is in a single room,
building or group of buildings, however, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over
any distance via telephone lines and radio waves.
Wired LAN
Features of a LAN
There are a variety of different features for a LAN.
Networking hardware- This is a switch that allows the computer to communicate to more than one
computer at the same time. It can either be physically wired or through Wi-Fi.
Servers- A server is the main system where all the data and applications are ran through. It is
accessed multiple times by different clients that work for the company because there is so many
people on the system at one time.
Advantages and Disadvantages LAN
Advantages:
- You can install a file server that can be used to share documents
- The network on the computers can be centralized
- Emails can be sent between different computers
Disadvantages:
The communication links between computers are normally provided from public
data networks and telephone lines
Disadvantages
It is very expensive to set up because the bigger the WAN the more it is going to cost set it up
security concerns such as unauthorised entry, stealing valuable information and using malicious damage to valuable files
Physical Topology
Physical topology is the way that you physically set up a network. Physical Topology also refers to
how the network is connected on the inside. The logical method is to connect physical devices on
the network using cables.
Types of physical topology
- Star Network
- Point to point
- Mesh networking
- Ring Network
- Bus network
Ring Network
A ring network is also another type of local network which allows nodes to connect in a
closed loop configuration. Adjacent pairs are connected directly. Other types of nodes are
connected directly and the data passes through free flowingly using intermediate nodes.
Star Network
Star Network is a local area network that allows nodes such as workstations and other devices
which are directly connected to one main common computer. Every other workstation is
directly connected to every other computer through the main computer. In some star networks
the main centralized computer can also be used as a workstation. The more workstations there
are the more work companies can get done.
Bus Network
The bus topology is for a Local Area Network in which all the nodes are connected to cables. If one node
breaks or fails, the whole bus network fails or breaks as they all use one wire to connect all the nodes
together.
Token Ring
A token continuously circulates inside the token ring. To transmit a message, a node pus a message through
with a destination address inside an empty token. The destination node copies the message data and
returns the token to the source with the source address and a data receipt message. The empty token now
changes back to normal circulation mode, and the process continues again.
Ethernet Logical Topologies
The ethernet cable is used in both bus and star topology as a way to connect all of the nodes together. It is
usually used in modern networks where communications are sent out directly from one computer to
another.
Gaming Environment
It is best to play a multiplayer game on a WAN because you can play with other people around the world
rather than the people in the same building as there is no internet connection in a LAN, However sometimes
yours or your friends connection can lag causing frustration as the game is stopped. With LAN the game is
never lagging as there is no connection.
Advantages
Disadvantages
In conclusion i have explained the wired and wireless network connections. I have explained the physical
topologies. I have explained the advantages and disadvantages of LAN and WAN network connections and I
have provided explanations of each. I have shown diagrams of each. I have written about the performance
of my chosen network.
