What exactly is
stress?
 Stress refers to a number of biological
changes that can be triggered by any
disturbance to our normal physiology.

 Stress is produced by an exposure to a

“stressor.”

 Stress is neutral – the body responds the

same to positive or negative stressors.

 The stress response is entirely

individualized.
“No one can live without experiencing
some degree of stress all the time. You
may think that only serious disease or
intensive physical or mental injury can
cause stress. This is false. Crossing a
busy intersection, exposure to a draft, or
even sheer joy are enough to activate the
body’s stress mechanisms to some
extent. Stress is not even necessarily bad
for you; it is also the spice of life, for any
emotion, any activity causes stress. But,
of course, your system must be prepared
General Adaptation
Syndrome
Three stages:
1. Alarm stage
- Emergency reaction (fight-or-
flight)
1. Resistance stage
- Coping and adaptation
1. Exhaustion stage
- Termination of stress response
and onset of stress pathology
The alarm phase or
“fight-or-flight” response
2-step physiological process:
1. Activation of the sympathetic
nervous system
- Quick response system, within
seconds
- Release of epinephrine
(adrenaline)
The alarm phase or
“fight-or-flight” response
2-step physiological process:
2. HPA Axis (hypothalamic-
pituitary-adrenal axis)
– Slower response system,
minutes to hours
– Release of cortisol

 For general health, take 1,000 mg of
EPA/DHA daily.
 For inflammatory and other
therapeutic indications increase
dosage to 3,000 mg of EPA/DHA daily.
 Limit fish consumption to no more
than two servings per week.
Fish Oils Effective in
Borderline Personality
1,000 mg of EPA daily for eight weeks shown to be effective in
reducing major symptoms in double-blind study.
