Figure 1.1

A student carries out an experiment to find out the relationship

between the weight, F, and the extension of the spring, x. The
arrangement of the apparatus for the experiment is shown in
Figure 1.1

In the early experiment, no mass of load is placed into the cup.

The initial reading, l0 is shown in Figure 1.1. The load with mass
of 0.05 kg is then placed into the cup and the new reading, l, is
obtained as shown in Figure 1.2.

The experiment is repeated by using loads with masses of 0.10

kg, 0.15 kg, 0.20 kg and 0.25 kg. The readings of the metre rule
are shown in Figure 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 as shown on page 3
The extension of the spring, x is given by the following equation:
x = l – l0 and the weight, F= mg where g = 10 ms-2.
(a) For the experiment described on page 2, identify:
(i) the manipulated variable : Weight / F / mass / m
(ii) the responding variable : Extension of spring / x/ reading of metre rule
(iii) constant variable :Diameter / type / length of spring
[3m]

(b) What is cm

5.30 cm )l0, on the metre rule when no load is placed
into the cup? [1m]

(a) Based on Figure 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6, determine the new reading,
l, F and x when m is equal to 0.05 kg, 0.10kg, 0.15 kg, 0.20 kg and
0.25 kg. Tabulate your result for m, F, l and x in the space below
[6m]

(b) On the graph paper on page 5, plot a graph of F against x [5m]

F increases linearly with x

A students carried out an experiment to investigate the relationship between
the pressure of the gas, P which has fixed mass and its volume, V
The results of the experiment is shown in a graph of P against 1/V shown in
Figure 2.1

(a) State the relationship between P and V [ 1m ]

P is inversely proportional to V / P is directly proportional to 1/V more

(b) Determine the value of P when V = 12.5 cm3. Show on the graph how
you determine P [ 3m ]
T
When V = 12.5 cm3 , then 1/V = 0.08 cm-3
Show works on graph
P = 80 cm Hg

(c) Determine V when P= 60cm Hg [ 2m ]

When P = 60 cm Hg, then 1/V = 0.06 cm-3
So V = 16.67 cm3
(d) The temperature of the gas, T is given by the equation: T = 3500/m,
where m is the gradient of the graph
(i) calculate the gradient of the graph P against 1/V . Show on the graph
how you determine the gradient. [ 3m ]
Shows a big triangle on graph
Substitute correctly according to the triangle
Value of m with correct unit ( 1000 cm Hg / cm-3 )
(ii) calculate the value of the temperature, T of the gas [ 2m ]
Correct substitution into the formula that is T = 3500/ 1000
States the value of T with correct unit that is 3.5 0 C

(e) During the experiment, the temperature of the gas must be fixed. Give a
reason for this precaution [ 1m ]
The changes in temperature will change the
pressure and the volume of the gas.
