Work

and
Power
Learning outcome
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 explain with examples how work is done
 state the unit of work
 calculate the work done
 state the meaning of power
 state the unit of power
 calculate power on the work done
7.4 Application of Work
 Work is done when an object is moved by a
force through a distance in the direction of the
force
 The unit of work is Joule (J) or Newton
metre(Nm)
Distance moved in
Work
= Force (N) x the direction of
done (J)
the force (m)
7.4 Application of Work
Example 1
Calculate the work done when a horizontal
force of 100 N is used to push a trolley a
distance of 5 m.

Solution

Work Done(J) = Force(N) x Distance moved (m)

=100N x 5m
= 500 J
7.5 Application of Power
 Power is the rate of doing work
 Power can be measured in Watts (W) or
Joule per second (Js-1)

Power Work done (J)

=
(W) Time taken (s)
7.5 Application of Power
Example 1
A man weighs 800 N climbing up a 20 m stairs in
just 10 s. Calculate the power he used to climb up
the stairs.

Solution
Work Power Work
= Force x Distance =
done (W) Time
= 800N x 20m
16 000
= 16 000 J =
10
= 1600W
Formula of work
Work (J) = Force(N) x Distance(m)

Formula of power
Power(W) = Work(J)

Hebat Module

A man and a woman

walk up a flight of stairs.
Each step is 20cm high.
There are 6 steps in
total.
The woman weighs
450N.
The man weighs 540N.

Question Answer
Who does the
most work The man does the most work
climbing the
stairs, the man or
the woman?

Explain your Work (J) depends on force (weight) and the

answer. distance travelled.
You should The distance covered is 20cm × 6 steps =

calculation. Both people are moving through the same
vertical height, but as the man weighs more,
he is doing more work.

What unit of Man: Work Done = 540 x 1.2 = 648J

measurement do Woman: Work Done = 450 x 1.2 = 540J

EXAMPLE 1
 Janetis pushing a box over a distance of
5m. If he pushes it with a force of 20N,
what is the amount of work done?
Work = Force x Distance
= 20N x 5m
= 100Nm = 100J
EXAMPLE 2
A student with a mass of 60kg
goes up a flight of stairs 5 m high.
Calculate the amount of work
done by the student.
Work = Force x Distance
= (60x10)N x 5m
= 600N x 5m
= 3000 Nm = 3000 J
EXAMPLE 3
A weightlifter takes 5 s to lift a weight of
1000N to a height of roughly 2 metres
above the ground. Calculate the power
delivered by the weightlifter.
Work done= force x distance moved
= 1000N x 2 m

QUIZ 1
A student of mass 40 kg walks up
a flight of stairs 3 m high carrying
a package of mass 5 kg. Calculate
the amount of work done by the
student.
Work = Force x Distance
= [(40+5)x10]N x 3m
= 450N x 3m
= 1350Nm = 1350 J
QUIZ 2
A machine lifts a load of mass
50kg over a distance of 10m.
Calculate the amount of work

= 500N x 10m
= 5000Nm = 5000 J
QUIZ 3
