Upper Esophageal Sphincter (UES)
- Control of swallowing
mechanism
- Regulates entry of food contents
from esophagus , not into the
respiratory tract

Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES)


- Regulates gastric - 2 primary functions:
emptying and prevent - Permit coordinated movement
gastroduodenal reflux after swallowing
