PROBLEM 1: DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS
The Antoine equation predicts the effect of
temperature on vapor pressure by the relation
𝑠
𝐵
ln 𝑃 = 𝐴 −
𝑇−𝐶
Where A,B, and C are Antoine constants. For water,
the values of the constants when the vapor
pressure is in kPa and temperature is in K are found
to be A = 16.26205, B= 3799.887, and C= 46.854.
What are these values when vapor pressure is in
mm Hg and temperature in 0C.
PROBLEM 2: RECYCLE
The final purification stage in the preparation of
vitamins from natural sources requires
centrifuging and continuous filtration as
depicted.
Determine the flowrate of the recycle stream in
kg/h.
PROBLEM 3: PURGE
One half of the high pressure steam after being
utilized for power generation is sent to the plant as
process steam. The other half is returned to the
boiler as condensate carrying 50 ppm of solids.
To keep the solid level in the boiler below 1600 ppm
solids, a part of the boiler water is blown down
continuously. The fresh boiler feed water is found to
contain 500 ppm of solids. If steam produced is free
of solids, calculate the weight ratio of feed water to
the blow down water.
PROBLEM 4: GASEOUS FUEL
A pure saturated hydrocarbon is burned with
excess air. Orsat Analysis of the products of
combustion show 9.08% CO2 , 1.63% CO, 5.28%
O2 , and no free H2.
Calculate:
Formula of the hydrocarbon
% excess air
Kg dry air/ kg of hydocarbon
PROBLEM 5: GASEOUS FUEL
The burning of pure butane with excess air gives
a stack gas which analyzes 11.55% CO2 on a dry
basis. Calculate:
%excess air
Complete orsat analysis of the stack gas
PROBLEM 6: LIQUID FUELS
Motor benzole is a mixture of 3 lower aromatic
hydrocarbons: benzene, toluene and xylene in
proportions of 75%, 15%, and 10% respectively.
Its calorific value is 41.9 MJ/kg. A motor is run
using benzole and gives an exhaust gas which
analyzes 10.7% CO2 , and 1.07% CO. Calculate:
% excess air
Complete analysis of the stack gas
Weight MW n C H

Benzene 75 78 0.9615 5.769 5.769

Toluene 15 92 0.163 1.304 1.304

Xylene 10 106 0.094 0.994 0.994

Total: Total:
7.662 8.013
PROBLEM 7: SOLID FUELS
The ultimate analysis of coal fired in boiler showed
57.04% C, 30.5% VCM, 1.2%N, 9.7% ash, and 6.3%
S. Analysis of the refuse showed 13.8% FC, 21.5%
VCM, 47.8% ash, and 16.9% water. Air is at 28 0C,
756 mm Hg with 76% RH. Orsat analysis of the stack
gas shows 7.92% CO2 , 2.38% CO, 0.39% SO2 , 1.19%
H2 ,10.65% O2 , and 77.47% N2 . Calculate:
a. %VCM and %C lost in the refuse
b. Ultimate analysis of coal
c. calorific value of coal
