SEMINAR PRESENTATION

GOOGLE SMART CONTACT LENS

PREPARED BY:- GEMECHIS SHIFERAW ID 607/08

INTRODUCTION

Many people live with painful and disruptive daily routines to manage their glucose level,
such as finger pricking to take a blood sample. Because of these reasons many people do
not check their glucose which can lead to kidney failure and blindness.

 Many researchers have been seeking alternative ways to monitor glucose without the use
of blood, in order to make it easier for diabetics to stay update of their sugar levels.
Research found some newer invasive glucose tests include checking saliva, urine, or
tears[1].
CON’T

And Google found a new way of measuring diabetes using tear. Google contact Lens is a

smart contact lens project by Google. The project aims to assist people with diabetes by

constantly measuring the glucose levels using tears. The project is released in 2018 and the

feature scope of Google contact Lens being carried out by the life sciences division of

Google X and Novartis is currently being tested using prototypes.

GENERAL MOTIVATION

• Ethiopia is facing significantly higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure, according
to the first nationally representative study of these “major killers” involving more than 1.3
million people.
• According to this context the diabetes is killing people without managing their glucose
level simply with low cost and with new technology so this is why I choose this seminar
title.
GOAL OF THE PAPER

Generally, I prepare this paper on Google Smart Contact Lens for the purpose of the
following: -
• To know drawback of the previous measurement of sugar level technology
• To understand how Google Smart Contact lens technology works and its advantage and
disadvantage
• To know the components in the Google smart contact lenses
• To give awareness for others about Google smart Contact lens
OVERVIEW ABOUT THE PREVIOUS TECHNOLOGY

Continuous Glucose Monitoring : - A Continuous Glucose Monitoring System sensor is

worn separately to the pump, inserted under the skin, and measures the level of glucose in
the interstitial fluid (fluid in the tissue). The sensor is disposable and changed according to
manufacturer recommendations.

Glucose Meter :- A small drop of blood, obtained by pricking the skin with a lancet, is
placed on a disposable test strip that the meter reads and uses to calculate the blood glucose
level[2].
CON’T

GlucoWatch :- The GlucoWatch is a device that provides frequent, automatic, non-

invasive glucose measurements. The glucose sample is obtained directly through intact skin.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION GOOGLE CONTACT LENS

• Google is developing a smart contact lens that can measure glucose level in tear

• Provides continuous monitoring of blood glucose level

• It can get a level reading once every second. The lens also features a tiny antenna,
capacitor and controller so that the information gathered from the lens can move from
the eye to a device such as a handheld monitor where that data can be read and analyzed
FIG: WEARING GOOGLE CONTACT LENS
COMPONENTS

• Wireless chip

• Circular shaped Antenna(thinner than a human hair)

• Glucose sensor

• Which are sandwiched between two layers of soft

contact lens[3].
WORKING OF GOOGLE CONTACT LENS

• A tiny pinhole in the upper layer of the lens lets tear fluid to seep
over the glucose sensor.
• A tiny antenna and chip help in gathering information from the
lens and transferring it to a device such as a hand held monitor.
• Communication between lens and external device is done using a
wireless technology RFID
• The smart contact lens is able to monitor glucose levels once per
every second[4].
WIRELESS CHIP & GLUCOSE SENSOR

• Smart contact lens that’s built to measure glucose levels in tears using a tiny
wireless chip and miniaturized glucose sensor that are embedded between two layers of
soft contact lens material.
RFID TECHNOLOGY

• Radio-frequency identification
• RFID is classified into two categories: 1.Reader 2.Tag
• In Google Lens an active Reader and a Passive Tag is used.
• Passive RFID systems use tags with no internal power source and instead are powered by
the electromagnetic energy transmitted from an RFID reader.
• Active RFID systems use battery-powered RFID tags that continuously broadcast their
own signal.
OTHER COMPONENT’S

The lens also has a tiny antenna, capacitor and controller that allow the information gathered
from the lens to move from the eye to a monitor where that data can be read and analyzed. It
will draw its power from that device and communicate with it using a wireless technology
known as RFID.
POWER SOURCE

 Power must be provided to lens via

wireless medium.
 Photo-diodes are disposed over the outer
surface of the contact lens.
 These photo-diodes can harvest optical
signals emitted from smart phone and
generate pawer from harvested optical
signals
ADVANTAGES

• With Google contact lens the traditional finger pricking method becomes obsolete.
• Simple and painless
• Continuous glucose monitoring
• Mobility to users
• Accurate Reading
• privacy
• Reusable
DISADVANTAGE

• Shouldn’t be worn while.

• The Contact lens may be allergic to some users.
• People already using lens for eyesight may have some difficulty in wearing Google lens.
• Cost of the Google contact Lens is not fixed
FUTURE SCOPE

• Google X are planning to restore the

eye’s natural focus in people with eye
problems.
• A possibility of including Camera into
the contact lens enabling people to take
a snap without anyone noticing.
• Futurologists say In two decades
internet will be in your contact lens, a
blink can take you online[5].
APPLICATION AREA

Google has declared the following application areas of Google contact lens after the technology
is finally developed with the feature scope.
• Diabetic patients manage their disease.
• Entertainment
• Communication
• Education
• Health Care
• Vision Correction
CONCLUSION

Diabetes has become a global epidemic during the last two decades. It is increasing at an
alarming pace of 7.8 million new diabetics each year and is taking an unsustainable
economic toll, amounting to 11.6% of the total healthcare expenditure.
The lens will help people with diabetes by closely monitoring the glucose levels from tears
• Contact Lens method is less painful but time consuming
• The technology is for diabetes is developed and realised and the feature scope is under
development.
• The Google contact lens takes it to a whole new level for monitoring Diabetes.
