• The textual coherence may be ensured most often by
syntactic factors (such as anaphoric and/or cataphoric
elements, connectives, the sentence order, and so on).
When these are missing, the pragmatic coherence may
take their place, as in Ezra Pound’s short poem In a
Station of the Metro:
• The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet black bough.
• It is the reader’s role to constitute these lines as
a text, by supplying the missing connections and
establishing a direction toward meaning.
