Storage

Angelo C. Cabang
EPAS 11
Storage- is a process through which digital data is saved within a data storage device by means of
computing technology. Storage is a mechanism that enables a computer to retain data, either
temporarily or permanently.

Storage may also be referred to as computer data storage or electronic data storage
Storage medium

In computers, a storage medium is any technology -- including devices and materials -- used to place, keep
and retrieve electronic data. It refers to a physical device or component in a computing system that receives
and retains information relating to applications and users. The plural form of this term is storage media.

Early forms of storage media included computer paper tape. Holes punched in the paper corresponded to
a single bit of data. A paper tape reader would interpret each punched hole and convert it to a number.
Paper tape was supplanted by magnetic tape, which eventually evolved to magnetic floppy disk.
A storage device is any computing hardware that is used
for storing, porting and extracting data files and objects.
It can hold and store information both temporarily and
permanently, and can be internal or external to a
computer, server or any similar computing device.

A storage device may also be known as a storage

medium or storage media.
A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive or
fixed disk[b] is an electromechanical data storage
device that uses magnetic storage to store and
retrieve digital information using one or more rigid
rapidly rotating disks (platters) coated with
magnetic material. The platters are paired with
magnetic heads, usually arranged on a moving
actuator arm, which read and write data to the
platter surfaces.[2] Data is accessed in a random-
access manner, meaning that individual blocks of
data can be stored or retrieved in any order and not
only sequentially. HDDs are a type of non-volatile
storage, retaining stored data even when powered off
Enternal Hard Disk
An external drive is just a hard drive (HDD) or solid-state drive
(SSD) that is connected to a computer on the outside rather than
on the inside.
Some external drives draw power over their data cable, which of
course comes from the computer itself, while others may require
an AC wall connection to derive power on their own.
External hard drives come in varying storage capacities, but
they all connect to a computer either by USB, FireWire, eSATA,
or wirelessly.

External hard drives are sometimes called portable hard drives.

A flash drive is one common, and very portable, type of external
hard drive
Removable Hard Disk

A type of disk drive system in which hard disks are

enclosed in plastic or metal cartridges so that they can
be removed like floppy disks. Removable disk drives
combine the best aspects of hard and floppy disks.
They are nearly as capacious and fast as hard disks and
have the portability of floppy disks. Their biggest
drawback is that they're relatively expensive
RAID

RAID is short for redundant array of independent disks.

Originally, the term RAID was defined as redundant array of

inexpensive disks, but now it usually refers to a redundant
array of independent disks. RAID storage uses multiple disks
in order to provide fault tolerance, to improve overall
performance, and to increase storage capacity in a system.
This is in contrast with older storage devices that used only a
single disk drive to store data.
Network Attached Storage

Network-attached storage (NAS) is dedicated file

storage that enables multiple users and
heterogeneous client devices to retrieve data from
centralized disk capacity. Users on a local area
network (LAN) access the shared storage via a
standard Ethernet connection. NAS devices
typically do not have a keyboard or display and are
configured and managed with a browser-based
utility. Each NAS resides on the LAN as an
independent network node, defined by its own
unique Internet Protocol (IP) address.
Hard Disk Controller

A hard disk controller (HDC) is an electrical

component within a computer hard disk that
enables the processor or CPU to access, read,
write, delete and modify data to and from the
hard disk. Essentially, an HDC allows the
computer or its processor to control the hard
disk
Miniature Hard disk

The miniature hard disks are very small hard disks.

These disks are available in different sizes such as 0.85
inch, 1 inch and 1.8 inch. Both internal and external
hard disks are available in miniature sizes..
