Recycled fibre, in Sweden
1. Quality grades and use
1.1 Collection extent
■More than 50% of all paper and all
board consumed in Sweden will be re-
used as raw material in new paper
products. Compared with other parts of
the world this level is high.
■The collection of used paper is
organised by independent companies

consumption.
1.2 Quality grades
Recycled fibre can be used in many
different paper grades, but the quality
demands of the raw material differ
between the application fields.
Consequently, first the recovered paper
must be sorted.
Mainly textile fabric, pieces of wood, glass,
plastic and other foreign material are
removed when sorting.
Fig. 2. An example of content in unsorted recovered paper.
Recovered paper can
be divided into
different quality
grades like: −
corrugated board −
newspapers and
other periodicals −
office paper.

To facilitate handling and transport the
paper is pressed into bales.

■1.3 Admixture degrees
■In spite of the great
collection of used paper,
the Swedish paper still
has a low content of
recycled fibre. In many
European countries the
admixture degree is
considerably higher.

Fig. 5. The share of recycled fibre spread on

the total Swedish paper production.
The Swedish paper production is about
10 million tons. About 1.8 million tons of
recovered paper is used, which means
about 15% average admixture of
recycled fibre.
The reason for this relatively little share
is the great difference between the
produced paper quantity and the
consumed one. Less than 20% of the
production is used within the country.
The remainder is exported.
