Optimization of

Composite Laminated
Structures

Composite material orientation
Sandwich structure

• The sandwich structures are a particular case of

laminates where the top and bottom layers
(faces) have higher stiffness and resistance
• The core layers are usually composed of a light
weight weaker material used to increase the
thickness of the global structure and so
increasing the bending stiffness.
Objective
The main objective is
• To maximize the stiffness (or to minimize compliance) of a structural
component
• Subjected to prescribed applied loads
• Composed by a series of regions or laminas made of different
materials selected from a set of (available) candidate materials.
Stiffness of a lamina

Transformation matrix to get stiffness values for

other orientation

• [𝐶]−1=[𝑆]
• C = 2U, U = Strain energy
• The strain energy can be found using abaqus software
which indirectly finds compliance

For a particular orientation say 0⁰

Design areas

k = lamina
j = region
r = design area = k*j
nm = number of materials orientation
max possibilities = r*nm
Discrete Material Optimization(DMO)
• Here we want to find one distinct material for each design region
from the set of pre-defined candidate materials.
• DMO is a methodology that allows us to transform this discrete
optimization problem into a continuous one.
• Thus making it possible to use deterministic gradient based
algorithms to solve the optimization problem choosing between the
several candidate materials.
Feasible Arc Interior Point Algorithm(FAPIA)

• The program requires an initial feasible

point that is the minimum point of start.

• At each iteration defines a feasible path

along which it will run its line search
algorithms.

• At each iteration, using the derivative

information provided, a “feasible descent
arc” (FAIPA) is established, depending on
the option selected by the user.
Process
• Generate the candidate material property list.
• Provide the loading and boundary conditions.
• For the provided number of lamina and regions generate various
model and find its stiffness in abaqus software.
• Develop optimization algorithm in matlab.
• For the required stiffness the optimized result is obtained in matlab.
