POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE

EFL TEACHING PROFESSION C

By D. Jendy Tamelab & Monica Amelia

What is attitudes?
Brown (2000) points out, attitudes are cognitive and affective;
that is, they are related to thoughts as well as to feelings and
emotions.
According to Gardner (1985, 10) attitudes are a component of
motivation, which “refers to the combination of effort plus desire
to achieve the goal of learning plus favorable attitudes towards
learning the language.
WHAT IS TEACHING
Teaching is described as a demanding job that requires in-
depth knowledge of subject content, age-specific pedagogy,
and many varied skills such as patience, leadership, and
creativity. Teaching a foreign language constitutes another
challenge for the teachers who are already attached the
primary liability in raising generations for contributing to the
development of their country.
Teaching profession is based on (Benţea & Anghelache,
2012, p. 167). Triverdi (2012, p. 24) portrays teaching
profession with the following remarks.

1.Teaching is a noble profession and differs from

other professions.
2.A teacher should be a role model, guide,
philosopher and a friend for the students.
3.Teachers’ beliefs, attitudes and views directly
affect their teaching behaviors.
4.Job satisfaction and expectations of their
profession also influence their work.
How should be teacher's attitude
towards a student?
• First and foremost, the teacher must be passionate about the
subject he’s teaching. A really passionate teacher can be
highly influential for the students to pursue their passion too.
• A teacher must be a continuous learner. Students like the
teachers who learn things with them.
• Teachers must be humble. They must realize that the students
know something that they don’t. They must not discourage
any student if they had failed in exams. The student must be a
very good dancer, he probably wouldn’t need
thermodynamics in his career. Ever.
• A good teacher is a good friend of students. He/she knows
about the passion of every student in the class. They can’t help
everyone to be successful in their field yet they can be
supporters.
• Understanding the students. The best the teachers can do is to
understand the situation the students are handling in the
current generation. Stress, Pressure, Low marks and heart break
are ruining this generation of students. A good teacher
understands the students and makes him realize that marks
doesn’t matter.
• Realizing their responsibility. Each and every teacher in the
country are responsible for the students they teach. Each and
every criminal activity that a student involves in the future falls
directly in the hands of the teacher. A student coming out of
an institution must not have only the technical education, he
must be good with his attitudes.
