Introduction

• What Is Thermo-Fluid Engineering?

– Thermal systems involve the storage, transfer, and conversion of energy.
– Therme (Greek) = Heat
– Thermodynamics + Heat transfer + Fluid mechanics
– Applications are nearly everywhere.

Thermo-fluid Engineering (MEC 2920) 9

Introduction
• Analysis of Thermal Systems
– Engineering Design
• Decision making process which principles drawn from engineering and other fields
such as economics and statistics are applied to devise a system, system component
or process.
• Establish objectives, analysis, synthesis, construction, testing, and evaluation
– Engineering Analysis
• Developing an engineering model to obtain a simplified mathematical representation of
system behavior that is sufficiently faithful to reality.
• Analysis is required for design, operation, maintenance, marketing and sales of thermal
systems.
• First step: identify system and how it interacts with its surroundings – Physic laws
– Analysis of thermal systems uses one or more of four basic laws:
• Conservation of mass
• Conservation of energy
• Conservation of momentum
• Second law of thermodynamics
– Thermal systems engineering typically requires the use of three thermal
science disciplines: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
Thermo-fluid Engineering (MEC 2920) 10
Introduction
– Thermodynamics
• The science of energy
– Study of energy, energy transformations, including power production and refrigeration,
and relationship among the properties of matter.
• Therme (Greek) = Heat Dynamics (Greek) = Power
• Classical thermodynamics: macroscopic approach
• Statistical thermodynamics: microscopic approach

Introduction
– Heat Transfer
• The physical science that deals with the determination of rates of heat transfer.
• Heat: form of energy that can be transferred from one system to another as a result
of temperature difference.

Thermo-fluid Engineering (MEC 2920) 12

What is the different?

• Where is “thermodynamics” name came from?

– from the Greek "heat power".
– However, nowadays, thermodynamics is no
longer restricted to heat and power (at least not in
the way those quantities are historically defined).

Thermo-fluid Engineering (MEC 2920) 13

What is the different?
• Thermodynamics • Heat transfer
– is the branch of science that – deals with ONLY one type of

a framework for converting another (the name is pretty
from one type to the other (i.e. straightforward).

– calculates how much heat will called “transport phenomena”
be transferred which include “heat transfer”
– calculates how fast heat will
be transferred
• Examples
– thermodynamics establishes

that the internal energy of a – Heat transfer describes the

within the body itself) and
how long the process takes.
Thermo-fluid Engineering (MEC 2920) 14
Introduction
– Fluid Mechanics
• The physical science which deals with fluids at rest (fluid statics) and in motion
(fluid dynamics), and the interaction of fluids with solid or other fluids at the
boundaries.
• Fluid: a substance (liquid or gas) which deforms continuously under the influence
of shear stress no matter how small.
• Stress: force per unit area.
• In a fluid at rest, the normal stress is called pressure.
• Liquids take the shape of the container and form free surface in gravitational fields.
• Gases do not have definite volumes and expand to fill entire available space.
