READING COMPREHENSION: SKIMMING AND SCANNING

They are both fast reading, without reading every
word.
Skimming is looking quickly through a text at the
main ideas (eg a newspaper, a television guide) to
see if something in it interests you.
Scanning is searching for something
specific quickly, for example prices,
answers, a phone number.
SUBSTITUTION (ANAPHORIC): Pros and Cons
1. Bob and Joe arranged to meet at the corner of King
Street and Ravenscourt Road at eight o’clock. Bob
and Joe met at the corner of King Street and
Ravenscourt Road at eight o’clock.
2. Mary met the king of Sweden. The king of Sweden
told Mary the good news.
3. I like Letizia more than King Felipe.
4. John kissed his wife and so did Sam.
5. Mary went to see her boss with a red face.
6. John climbed onto the Victorian table with finely-

one, this, that, etc. (for a noun=nominal)
that, this, so & not, neither, nor, which, etc. (for a clause)
do, did, is, are, was, had, have, etc. (for a verb or verb group=“pro-verb”)
there, here etc. (for an adverbial of place=“pro-adverb”)
SUBSTITUTION AND ELLIPSIS
We avoid repetition of words or expressions that have
already been used by means of substitution and
ellipsis.
Substitution means using other words, such as: it (and
ALL pronouns are substitutions of course), one, do,
there, that, so, etc.
Ellipsis means leaving out words to avoid repetition.
Ellipsis is a specially common device in colloquial
English:
“(Are you) going on holiday this year?”
“(I’m) not sure. (It) depends how much I can save.”
SUBSTITUTION
What is the (anaphoric) referent of the words in italics?
We’ve been to Paris many times but Ian hasn’t been
there.
“Are you coming with us?” “I may do.”
Bill doesn’t like Indian food and neither do I.
Would you like a coffee? I’d love one.
Would you like to come to an exhibition? That sounds
great.
Will we get the work finished by Saturday? I hope so.
After flying all that way, she won’t feel like doing
much more than going to bed. I suppose not.
SUBSTITUTION

ELLIPSIS: what words are “missing”?
After and, but and or:
She felt hurt and angry. They were pleased but
embarrassed. I may buy her a bag or an iPhone.
At the end of a verb group:
She wanted to spend more time in Italy but she
couldn’t.
She said she was going to talk to a lawyer and she has.
With infinitives:
She didn’t want to give the puppies away but she had
to.
He doesn’t play the piano now but he used to.
