Question: Explain and compare what

happens when liquids are heated and
cooled
Explain what happens when Explain what happens when
liquids are heated liquids are cooled
Physical change-evaporation Physical change- condensation
(liquidgas) (gasliquid)
Some particles have more energy Some particles have less energy
than others and escape as gas or and turns back into liquid
vapour
As temperature increases the As temperature decreases the
rate of evaporation increases rate of evaporation decreases
Particles are moving faster in Particles are moving slower in
hot water cold water
Motion of particles are increased Motion of particles are
because the particles become decreased because the particles
more energetic are less energetic
Air pressure increases in the Air pressure decreases in the
flask when heated as particles flask when heated as particles
get further apart get closer together
Experiment 1
Design an experiment to test the expansion of
liquid
Method:
1. Set up Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze mat
2. Measure 100mL of tap water in the plastic measuring
cylinder and pour into the conical flask
3. Stretch the deflated balloon over the neck of the conical
flask
4. Place the conical flask with balloon attached on top of the
gauze mat
5. Once water has heated observe and record results
6. Place the conical flask into a tray full of ice water, observe
and record results
Experiment 2
Design an experiment to
demonstrate chemical reactions
Method:
1. Measure 50mL of vinegar into the plastic measuring cylinder and
pour it into the conical flask
2. Place 1/2-1 teaspoon of bicarb soda into the deflated balloon using
the funnel
3. Making sure the bicarb soda does not fall into the vinegar yet,
stretch it over the neck of the conical flask
4. Stretch the balloon up while making sure it is still attached to the
conical flask to allow the bicarb soda to fall into the vinegar. BE
CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE WEARING SAFETY
GLASSES!
5. Pinch the bottom of the balloon where the opening is to take off
conical flask carefully and release gas away from anyone
6. Observe and record results comparing before and after
Expectations When Experimenting

1. Wear safety goggles and leather shoes

2. Working together collaboratively (groups of 4)

3. Think about the purpose of this experiment and why you think
things are happening

4. Work safely and respectfully

What Did You Find?
Chemical reaction:
- Bicarb soda + vinegar  carbon dioxide + water
Observations:
- Bubbles in solution (C02)
- CO2 has no where to go but into the balloon- Amount of
carbon dioxide gas will exceed the space in the bottle, it will
move into the deflated balloon and will inflate it.
- Physical change- liquid to gas
