reflects the situation of
the time being passed.
Contemporary art is an art
that free to reflects, not
bound by the old rules and
developed according to the
present. This means that
contemporary music is music
that has never existed
before.
What are the characteristics of
contemporary music?

Harry Roesli
• This professor of psychology is not an ordinary
musician. He created a phenomenon of the
culture of contemporary music that is
different,communicative,and consistent.He is
able to creatively create and serve art
communicatively.Some of his famous works of
music are : “Musik Rumah Sakit” ( 1979 dan
1980 in Jakarta), “Parenthese”, “Musik Sikat
Gigi” (1982 in Jakarta), Opera Ikan Asin, and
Opera Kecoa.
• The tools used for his contemporary music were
percussion,band,music record
Slamet Abdul Sjukur
• Slamet associates works of contemporary
music with the modern music. One of his
music characteristic was always break
tradition. His music creavity is talk more
than social problem or political issue. He
always develop a new sound that never
been explored before. Sometimes in his
show, he mixed music with dance.
Djaduk Ferianto
• Djaduk Ferianto is matching between
traditional music element and modern
music. In his musical, he played the
common musical instrument that we often
see, but he create uncommon combination
such as Gendang of traditional music with
flute of classical music. Djaduk did lot
experiment with his music group based in
Yogyakarta, named Sinten Remen.
I Nyoman Windha
• Traditional Bali music is always dominated
by percussion, so their music
characteristic is tend to be hard, high-
spirited and lively. But I Nyoman Winda,
composes his contemporary music with
new composition, bamboo symphony that
combined with vocal music.
Al Suwardi
• Gamelan "genta" or Gamelan with chime
form, was obsolete in Solo Kingdom. It's
beautiful sound always heard in his ear
and touch Al Suwardi's feeling. He then
create a new set of gamelan "genta", with
new orientation and new music scale. His
group is well known as Swara Genta.
