Introduction
National Institute of Science & Technology

•Li-Fi was first showcased by Harald Haas from University of

Edinburgh, UK at the TED Global conference.

•Li- Fi is implemented using white LED light bulbs.

•It sends a single data stream of bits at the rate of 10,000-

20,000bps.

Working of Li-Fi
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Li-Fi is typically implemented using white LED light ROUTER

bulbs at the downlink transmitter. Cloud
LAN
• Operational procedure is :
if the LED is on, you transmit a digital 1
if it’s off you transmit a 0

• The LEDs can be switched on and off very LED

quickly, which gives nice opportunities for LAMP
transmitting data.

• A controller is used to code data into those LEDs

and for encoding it is needed to vary the rate at
which the LED’s flicker depending upon the data
we want to encode. PHOTO USER/
DETECTOR CLIENT
• For parallel data transmission, an array of LEDs
can be used.

LI-FI ATTOCELL
National Institute of Science & Technology

• The network spectral efficiency has been increased by

two orders of magnitude in the last 25 years.
• Attocell composed of different cells.

1. Femtocells
2. Picocells .
3. Microcells

MULTIPLE ACCESS
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Multiple access is a technique that lets multiple

mobile users share the allotted spectrum in the most
effective manner.
• Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a
technique for transmitting large amounts of digital
data over a radio wave.

Potential Applications Of Li-Fi
National Institute of Science & Technology

•Traffic lights

•Intrinsically Safe Environment

•Hospital

•Smart Power Plant

•Airlines

•Undersea Awesomeness

Advantages and Disadvantages of Li-Fi
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Li-Fi can solve problems related to the insufficiency of radio

frequency bandwidth because this technology uses Visible light spectrum
that has still not been greatly utilized.

• Li-Fi has low implementation and maintenance costs.

• It is safe for humans since light, unlike radio frequencies, cannot

penetrate human body. Hence, concerns of cell mutation are mitigated.

• A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how the receiving device will

transmit back to transmitter.

• High installation cost of the VLC systems.

P.Preet Jasmine (201541080) [8]

Conclusion
National Institute of Science & Technology

• Li-Fi is rapidly emerging as a powerful wireless networking solution to the

looming RF spectrum crisis, and an enabling technology for the future
Internet-of-Everything.

• The straightforward multiple access technique that OFDMA provides at

almost no additional complexity.

• This may solve issues such as the shortage of radio-frequency bandwidth and
also allow internet where traditional radio based wireless isn’t allowed such as
aircraft or hospitals.
