SPECIFICATIONS

What are Specifications?

Specifications describe the nature and


the class of the work, materials to be used
in the work, workmanship etc. and is very
important for the execution of the work.
The cost of a work depends much on the
specifications. Specifications should be
clear.

 Govern Cost
 Describe the quality and quantity of different materials
 Specify the workmanship and the method
 A work is carried out according to its specification and the
contractor is paid for the same
 contractor can calculate the rates of various items of works
in tender with his procurement rates of materials and labour
 specify the equipment tools and plants to be engaged for
a work and thus enables to procure them beforehand.
 verify and check the strength of materials for a work
involved in a project.
Excavation, Filling and Grading

This section consists of furnishing all items,


materials, equipment, labor, plants,
appliances, methods and all operations
that may be necessary, and incidentals to
complete excavation, filling, back-filling
and grading in accordance with the
Plans, and schedule if any, and subject to
the terms and conditions of the Contract.
Excavation
 Cut Slope for permanent excavations shall not be steeper than 1.5H
to 1V, and slopes for permanent fills not steeper than 2H to 1V unless
a substantial data w/c justify steeper slopes are submitted
 Deviation form the limitations for slopes shall be permitted upon
presentation of soil investigation acceptable to the Engr.
 Trim the excavation to the required depth, lines, grades.
 The materials to be excavated shall include: any rock, earth and
other materials of any nature and description encountered in
obtaining the indicated lines and grades
 Excavation shall be continued until safe bearing power is reached.
 Piers, walls, and ftgs shall be revised to suit the new condition.
 No fills or other surcharge loads shall be placed adjacent to any
building unless capable of withstanding the additional loads
Excavation
Ftgs/Foundations w/c may be affected by the
excavation shall be underpinned/protected against
lateral movement.
Fills to be used to support the foundations shall be
placed in accordance with accepted engineering
practices.
Additional payment for excavation shall be
computed per unit bid price/ at established unit
price.
Unauthorized Excavation

Where ftgs & foundations occur, use concrete fill of


the same class as specified for such.
Where slab occur, use a well compacted sand and
gravel fill.
Excavation Omitted

When good/safe bearing is found at high grades


than the subgrade levels indicated on the Plan.
Owner’s decision (be ordered in writing)
Protection, Pumping & Maintenance

Contractor shall protect the excavations and


trenches from damages of rain water, backing of
drains and all other water.
Operate pumps to free the excavations from water.
Build necessary enclosures, construct and maintain
temporary drainage
Blasting

Where materials to be excavated requires blasting,


surfaces shall be exposed
Contractor shall notify the Owner who will make survey
and cross section of the existing surfaces
Blasting shall be done only by qualified skilled worker.
Contractor shall take all precautions to insure the safety
of persons & properties.
Avoid shattering or removal of rocks beyond authorized
lines & grades.
Inspection
NO inspection = No POURING OF CONCRETE

Filling & Grading
 All excavations shall be backfilled immediately as work
permits
 Materials taken from excavations shall be used for back-filling
 Filling materials shall be made in layers not to exceed 15cm
and thoroughly tampered before the next fill is placed.
 Open tile drains shall be covered with crushed rock/gravel for
a depth of 30cm and be graded from coarse to fine.
 In spaces where slabs rest on ground, or on earth fill shall be
graded with 10cm thick of gravel and sand and tampered.
 All exterior grades shall be formed in accordance with the
drawings and specs, taking into account the requirements for
landscaping works.

Termite Control

This Item shall consists of furnishing all


materials and labor, and applying termite
control chemicals, including the use of
equipment and tools in performing such
operations in accordance with the
specifications.

immediately exterminate termites or
create barriers to discourage entry of
subterranean termites into the building
areas.

 Soil to be treated shall be in friable condition with low MC.
Toxicant shall be applied at least 12 hrs before placement
of concrete.
 Treatment for exterior sides of walls/foundation shall be
done prior to final grading and planting/landscaping.
 Areas to be covered by concrete slab shall be treated
before placement of granular fill

3-2 MATERIALS REQUIREMENT
1. Portland Cement
Shall conform to the requirements of ASTM C-
150 Type for normal Portland Cement; Type III
for High Early Strength Portland Cement.

Cement shall be standard commercial brand in


40 kg per bag such as Filipina, Union, Republic,
Apo or other locally available equivalent

3-2 MATERIALS REQUIREMENT
2. Fine Aggregates
 Shall be clean, hard, coarse river sand or crushed
sand free from injurious amount of clay loam and
vegetable matter and shall conform to ASTM C-33 or
C330
3. Coarse Aggregate
 Shall be river run gravel or broken stones. Max size
shall be 1/5 of the nearest dimension between sides
of forms of the concrete, or ¾ of the minimum
clearing spacing between rebars or between rebars
and forms which ever is smaller

4. Mixing water
Shall be clean and free from injurious
amount of oils, acids, alkali, and other
deleterious substances.
5. Admixture
Shall conform to ASTM C-260. Water
reducing admixtures and the like shall
conform to ASTM C-494.

3-3 Storage of Materials
Shall be stored to prevent intrusion of foreign
matters.
Cement shall be stored in waterproof bodegas
with floor raised from the ground.

3-4 Plain Concrete
General Requirements
 With min. ultimate compressive strength @28days
=140kg/cm^2 or 2000 lb/in^2.
 Thickness of walls may be 5cm less than the required 6.17
for plain masonry walls but in no case less than 18cm
 Shall consist of Portland Cement, fine aggregates, water
and if specified, Admixtures.
 The ff special types of concrete shall be used where
indicated on the drawing:
Lean Concrete
Concrete with integral waterproofing
High early strength concrete

3-4 Plain Concrete
General Requirements
All provisions of the Specs shall apply the 7
day compressive strength equal to the 28
day strength required for normal concrete

3-5 Proportioning of Concrete
 Contractor shall employ, at his own expense, an approved testing,
laboratory
 Minimum of 6 cylinders, 3 tested at 7 days; 3 at 28 days in accordance
with ASTM C-192 & G-39 and by slump test.
 Testing Lab shall submit 5 copies of test results.
 If approved mix design proves unsatisfactory, Contractor shall inform the
Engr.
 Stone Concrete @ 28 days
 (Fc’ 27.58MPa for beam,slab,column)
 (Fc’ 20.68MPa for ftg & walls)
 Water Content shall not exceed 28 li per 40kgs/bag of cement. Slump Test
shall not exceed 10cm
 Lean Concrete @ 28 days
 13.79 Mpa, slump and size shall be subjected to the approval.
