HISTORY

• This is a chapel dedicated to the Cebuano saint, Pedro

Calungsod, who was martyred in Guam in 1672

• Designed by Carlos Arnaiz, an architect born in the

Philippines to a Spanish–Filipino father and a Colombian
mother. He was educated first at a Jesuit school run by
exiled Chinese priests, then at Williams College and the
Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD).
HISTORY

• Dedicated on November 29, 2012; the third day of the

Triduum of the National Thanksgiving Celebration for the
Canonization of Pedro Calungsod

• It was dedicated more than a month later when San Pedro

Calungsod was canonized as saint (October 21, 2012)

• First consecration mass on its day of dedication celebrated

by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma along with Cebu
Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal
HISTORY

• Donated by SM Prime Holdings

• The first structure to be built in the SM Seaside City

Complex, which essentially reflects the Spanish tradition of
building “towns” around the church

of different height from the other

• All walls are faced on one side making it look solid from
the front, and transparent on the side
HISTORY

• The chapel also has a segregated room for Baptistry and

for children

• Can accommodate up to 803 people at the same time

• Weddings can be celebrated here for around P50,000.00

INDIVIDUAL
LEARNINGS
Refamonte, Ma. Abigail

 I learned that the chapel was built with a

modern design by the architect Carlos
Arnaiz. There are hopes for this chapel to
be turned into a national shrine, but there
are certain requirements like a number of
devotees who visit the church, a natural
growth to its own devotion, and enough
priests to administer the sacraments
 I also learned how to appreciate the
solemnity of a holy place, especially during
a visit on a day the chapel is less crowded.
Mata, Alyssa Joyce
 There was not much of the traditional parts since
the design is modern. Nevertheless, its
architecture is great and unique. What I liked
most about it is that they have a designated place
where the babies, children and the parents who
are feeding or taking care of their child could stay.
I really think it is helpful because babies and
children tend to make noise and some people
easily get distracted. So to prevent distraction and
maintain solemnity, babies and kids could stay
there. Moreover, I believe that the best thing
about the San Pedro Calungsod Chapel is that
their scheduled masses start on time and they
handle the eucharistic celebration well and
properly.
Rondina, Ven Rozhel

 I learned that the architectural styles od

the church differs over time yet most of
the parts still remained, such as the St.
Pedro Calungsod Shrine where most of the
parts of an old structured churches still
remained.
Pedrosa, Kyle Anthony

 This activity taught me many things like

the architectural structure of the chapel.
Its main attraction are the 100 walls. The
chapel is unique to other chapels or even
churches in the sense that its structure is
influence by modern designs. Also, the
mass schedule is on time. San Pedro
Calungsod Chapel is propose to be the
National Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod.
Caspe, Icycle

 In our busy life schedule, we sometimes forget to

see the value of little but significant things in our
life. In our decision to direct our focus and life to
success and excellence, we become unable to
reflect and appreciate the people who helped us
in our journey. We become so driven to be
inspirational and successful that we fail to look
back and thank the people who were with us.
There will always be meaning to things no matter
how small they are. There’s a reason why it was
made that way.
Caspe, Icycle
 Churches makes us seem closer to God. It has a
unique structure that makes it stand out. Each
carvings, image, structure holds a significant
meaning. But they are often forgotten. Through
this activity, I was able to see the value of certain
things that no matter how small they are, they are
important and holds a significant role in the
society. Just like us, no matter how small we feel
we are, no matter how unloved we think we are,
we have to remember that in our little ways we
can make a difference and in order to make a big
difference we have to start small. That
somewhere in this world, someone cares and
loves you and that we are important and there’s
value in life.
