O Big Bang

Dark matter, dark energy
Vídeo In a nutshell
What is dark matter? What about dark energy? The answer is that we really don’t know. The
matter that we can see you, the desk you are sitting in, the Earth, the Sun, all the galaxies in
the Universe only makes up about five percent of all the matter in the Universe. So that leaves
95 percent of the Universe that is made up of an unknown substance we call dark matter.
• While we can’t see dark matter in the traditional sense of using our eyes to view matter, we can
observe how the matter we can see reacts with it. We also know that the Universe must be
much heavier than just that five percent of traditional matter because there isn’t enough gravity
from visible matter to hold galaxies and clusters and
superclusters
together. Therefore,
something else must be providing all of that weight. We can also observe how the gravity of dark
matter bends light.
• Dark energy is the unexplained force that is causing the expansion of the Universe to
accelerate. Once again, we don’t really know what it is because we can’t observe it but we know
it’s there. In fact, dark energy seems to be the energy of empty space because it is the space
between galaxies that is expanding.
Estamos sozinhos no Universo?
This short video provides a first look at the question about whether or not life exists in other parts of the
Universe.
. Over the course of the last century, scientists discovered that the Universe is unimaginably big
. In the last 20 years, scientists have discovered many planets outside our solar system
. It is possible that many of these planets have conditions like those on Earth that allowed life to evolve
. The possibility that life even complex life exists somewhere in the Universe is a relatively new idea
. Astronomers and physicists are currently searching the Universe for exoplanets and exoplanets that have
Earth like conditions
. What was once thought to be a topic suitable only for works of science fiction is now an important research
focus for astronomers and physicists
