Respiration in
Plants
THEY BREATHE LIKE DA HUMANS TOO.
NOT REALLY ACTUALLY
WHY?
❀ EXTRA INFORMATION❀
❀ ☾= respiration ☼=photosynthesis
❀ aerobic respiration for plant is long term
respiration meanwhile anaerobic
respiration is short term respiration
❀ aerobic respiration for human can get
muscles, abs and biceps.
❀ you can use ethanol to make rice wine
and perfume
Energy requirement
in plants
• MOST of their energy derive from cellular respiration
• During cellular respiration, glucose is broken down and
energy is obtained. It’s stored in ATP molecules
• Even though plants can’t photosynthesize without
sunlight, respiration continues because plants need
energy to sustain vital living processes.
• Energy requirement is much lower than
that of animals because plants do
not move much. ((lol))

STOMATA
CONSISTS OFA PORE SURROUNDED BY GUARD
CELLS
- RESPITORY GASES ENTER AND LEAVE PLANTS VIA
THE STOMATA IN THE EPIDERMIS OF THE LEAVES AND
THE STEMS OF HERBACEOUS PLANTS
- GUARD CELL CONTAINS LARGE NUMBER OF
CHLOROPLASTS IN WHICH PHOTOSYNTHESIS TAKES
PLACE
- STOMATA OF MOST PLANTS OPEN WHEN THERE IS
LIGHT AND CLOSE IN THE DARK

• Lenticels are raised pores found on stems and
roots of plants
• Cells around lenticels are arranged loosely to
allow the diffusion of gasses into and out of

Aerobic and anaerobic
respiration in plants

• Aerobic respiration is usually carried out by

all plants throughout day and night
• Under certain situations such as a flood,
plants carry out anaerobic respirations for
short periods. They can survive for several
days when completely submerged in water
• Anaerobic respiration also occurs during
initial stages of seed germination when the
embryo is completely enclosed within an
airtight seed coat
Respiration and photosynthesis in
plants
• Interdependent
• Photosynthesis produces raw materials
required by respiration
• Respiration produces raw materials for
photosynthesis
• Photosynthesis only occur in the pressence of
light. Respiration can be carried out in Idk for this

At low light intensity

• Uses up CO2 produced during respiration and

releases O2 needed for respiration
• As light intesnsity increases, rate of
photosynthesis also increases
• The compensation point is reached when all
CO2 is used up. At this point there is no net
gain or loss in the sugar produced.
At higher light intesity

• As light intensity continues to

increase during the day, the rate of
photosynthesis exceeds the rate of
respiration. CO2 produced is no
longer sufficient
• Plants must take in CO2 from the
atmosphere at the same time, plants
release excess O2
