Primitive Communication Techniques

• Disorganized signs
Non-standardized, different signs carried different meaning for different people

• Cave Paintings
Around 30,000 BCE, communication became slightly organized and intentional Cave
paintings created out of extracts of crushed fruits and berries
The purpose was to communicate to others what animals were safe to eat

Common technique before written communication began
Not standardized, varied from tribe to tribe

• Drums and Smoke Signals


Attracted unwanted attention from predators and enemy tribes

Early Written Communication

• Handwritten documentation was practiced before printing press

• Known as manuscripts meaning “book written by hand”

• Written on vellum- sheet made of calf skin

• 7th and 13th centuries was considered the age of the religious manuscript

• During Rennaisance (13th to 17th century), secular books were produced

Printing Press

• Revolutionary invention by Johannes Gutenberg in 1448

• A german inventor born in Mainz

• Printed the Gutenberg Bibles on large scale

• Invention took a while to catch on

• The upper class wanted to keep the public ignorant

Letter Writing
• A personalized experience but disorganized

• No effective postal system in place

• First United States Post Office was created in 1775

• Benjamin Franklin named the first Postmaster General

• System expanded rapidly and letter writing gained more popularity

• Performs the task quickly and efficiently

• Sending of electrostatically-generated signals through a wire

• No specific person attributed with the invention

• In america,Samuel F.B. Morse in 1837

• William Watson Of England in 1747

• Instant communication across long distances

• Popular for wartime communication and upper class during Victorian Era

The Telephone

• Invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell

• Transmission of sound waves across long distance

• Initially unpopular among the people

• Reasons: No Novelty Value due to telegram and Cost involved

• Once Poplular became indispensable

The Radio

• Began as short-wave communication used during WWI

• Blossomed into the hottest communication technology of the era

• Radios were incredibly popular

• Inexpensive medium of entertainment

• Edwin Armstrong, “the father of FM radio”

• Poplular till date

• John Logie Baird invented TV in 1924

• Held his first public demonstration in 1925

• Revolutionized the mass communication Industry

• Once luxury now a necessity

• A major source of information and entertainment

Internet

• Invented in 1967 for military purposes

• Basically, its a group of computers able to connect to each other and share information

• Use of email and websites to exchange information

• Used for a variety of reasons such as socialization,research, advertising etc.

• Information just a click away

• Global reach

Social Networking

•Special class of websites designed to meet three specific criteria:


– The majority of the content on the site is user generated
– High level of interaction between social media website users
– websites are easily integrated with other websites

•Blogging and Micro blogging

•Facebook, Instagaram, Whatsapp etc

•Faciliatates social relations through internet

•Used for socialization, information, advertising and marketing
