The Inabel or
populary known
as Abel
Iloco simply
means
handwoven cloth..
Abel in Ilocano refers to the process
of weaving while inabel is the final
woven product made from cotton
and other natural fibers.
ILOCOS REGION
• Panagabel – oldest
Ilocano tradition that
they have inherited
from their ancestors.
The main ingredients of
this loom are tilar,
sinulid and pasensya
(patience).

Every Ilocano worth his salt has an abel somewhere in his


house; the fabric being an intrinsic part of their lives. From
birth, they are wrapped in abel blanket. During their weddings,
they wear dresses made from abel. Even in death, they are again
wrapped in a blanket made of the same material.

This has been considered as a very valuable piece and often used
as a gift for weddings. Other lingling-o are made of silver and
copper. In some places it is made of jade, shell, clay or stone. The
material used in making of the lingling-o is a sign of its owners
social status.
