MILITARY AVIATION

INTRODUCTION

It is the use of military aircraft and other flying

machines for the purpose of conducting aerial warfare
,logistical supply to airbase.

Airpower includes national means of conducting such

warfare including the intersection of transport and warcraft.
 HISTORY
The Wright 1908 Model A , is the
first military aircraft which was
purchased by the U.S. Army
Signal Corps.
The first military uses of aviation
involved lighter-than-air balloons.
The concept was first used in the
Battle of Fleurus in 1794, the French
used this to monitor Austrian troop
movements. Later in the 19th
century it was regularly used in
American Civil War and WW2.After
WW2 gradually lighter aircrafts
were replaced by heavier aircrafts
for vast applications.
MILITARY AIRCRAFT
“Military aircraft is any fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft that is
operated by a legal armed services of any type .”

Military aircrafts includes Army , Navy , Air Force , Marine Corps , Coast
Guard , Transport aircrafts .

Military aircrafts can be either combat or noncombat. Combat aircrafts

are designed to destroy enemy equipment using their own aircraft ordnance. Non
Combat aircrafts are not designed for combat as their primary function but may
carry weapons for self defense,these may be developed by either military or
civilian organisations.
COMBAT AIRCRAFTS
FIGHTER AIRCRAFT-Primary role is to
destroy enemy aircraft in air-to-air
combat,as part of both offensive and
defensive counter air operations. Many
fighters also possess a degree of ground
attack capability, allowing them to
perform surface attack and close air
support missions.
BOMBER AIRCRAFT-Bombers are normally
larger, heavier, and less maneuverable
than fighter aircraft. They are capable of
carrying large payloads of bombs,
torpedoes or cruise missiles. Bombers are
used almost exclusively for ground
attacks and not fast or agile enough to
take on enemy fighters head-to-head.
MARITIME PATROL AIRCRAFT-A
maritime patrol aircraft fixed-wing military
aircraft designed to operate for long
durations over water in maritime patrol
roles—in particular anti-submarine, anti-
ship and search and rescue.
MULTIROLE COMBAT AIRCRAFT-Many
combat aircraft today have a multirole
ability. Normally only applying to fixed-
wing aircraft, this term signifies that the
plane in question can be a fighter or a
bomber,depending on what the mission
calls for.
NON COMBAT AIRCRAFTS
MILITARY TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT

Military transport (logistics) aircraft are

primarily used to transport troops and war
supplies. Cargo can be attached to
pallets, which are easily loaded, secured
for flight, and quickly unloaded for
delivery. Cargo also may be discharged
from flying aircraft on parachutes,
eliminating the need for landing. Also
included in this category are aerial
tankers, these planes can refuel other
aircraft while in flight.
AIRBORNE EARLY WARNING AND
CONTROL AIRCRAFT

An airborne early warning and control

(AEW&C) system is an airborne radar
system designed to detect aircraft, ships
and ground vehicles at long ranges and
control and command the battle space in
an air engagement by directing fighter
and attack aircraft strikes. The system is
used offensively to direct fighters to their
target locations, and defensively in order
to counterattacks by enemy forces, both
air and ground.

TYPE OF FUEL USED IN MILITARY AIRCRAFT

➢ A blend of approximately 30% kerosene and 70% gasoline

Known as wide-cut fuel is primarily used in military
aircraft.

➢ An ideal military aircraft consumes approximately 1

gallon of fuel to cover a distance of 12 miles.

➢ B-2 Spirit also known as stealth bomber is the most expensive military
aircraft which costs around $737 million, owned by U.S. Military.

➢ In 1956 due to high speed a F11 fighter shot itself because it was faster than
its own bullet.

➢ North American X-15 is the world’s fastest manned aircraft with a maximum
speed MACH 6.70 i.e about 7200 kms per hour which six times faster than
the speed of sound.

➢ Antonov An-124 Ruslan designed by U.S.S.R. is the largest military aircraft

with a wingspan of 69m and length of 69m.
