Definition of Communication
• Communication is a “process by which two or
more people exchange ideas, facts, feelings or
impressions in ways that each gains a common
understanding, meaning and use of message”.
According to Paul Leagens.
• Communication is defined as the “process of
passing the information and understanding
from one person to another. It is the process
of imparting ideas and making oneself
understood by others. According to Theo
Haiemann.
Types of Communication
1) Verbal Communication:
• An example of verbal communication is
provided by the words, spoken or written like:
sister I am hungry.
2) Non verbal Communication
• It refers to messages that don’t involve written
or spoken words.
• This message is conveyed through the
behaviors or body language: Such as bodily
movements, postures, Gestures, facial
expression and silence.
Importance of Communication
• Helps to develop trust and rapport
• Provides professional satisfaction, job
satisfaction, motivation towards works etc.
• Bring changes in knowledge, skill and
attitude.
• Establish and maintain relationship between
other health professional team.
• Promote co-operation and co-ordination thus
promote managerial efficiency.

Principles Communication
1. Systematic analysis of the message
2. Selection and determination of appropriate
language and medium.
3. Timing, physical setting, and the organization
climate for communication need.

5. The basic content and overtones of message

value to the receiver in the light of his/her
needs, interests, whenever possible.
7. Feedback from receivers, follow-up of
communication through expression of the
receivers, reactions and their performance
review help in effective communication.
